When I was a fairly young boy of about twelve years of age, my mother wanted me to learn tennis, so she got me a tennis racquet for Christmas so that I might take up the hobby. There had been many options in terms of choosing a tennis racquet. My mother told me later and it had been quiteconfusing.

My mother had gone to a sports shop and chosen one racquet out of the three that I guess were in her price bracket at that time. But today, choosing a racquet can be quite a difficult job. Brands, materials, technologies – they all add to the difficulty of making a choice.

The various options one has today in a sports store can sometimes be disconcerting. So what elements should be taken into account when choosing a tennis racket?

To start with, look at the grip size. Children would most likely find that up to size four would suit them best while adults may go up to 4 and 5/8″ in order to get a better grip of the tennis racquet.

The head size is also quite important when selecting your racquet. Probably women and children would prefer the head size to be smaller and offer more precision and would not get on with the larger head size tennis racquet which requires more strength although it offers more precision when hitting the ball.

The middle size is somewhere between 85 and 95 square inches and this is the one that suits most players, whether amateurs or professionals. Novices are recommended to buy a larger-head tennis racket as they would not focus so much on precision but rather on the power that the racquet will supply to their hit.

Another factor to take into account is the flex quality of the tennis racquet. If the racquet is stiff you will almost certainly have more power when hitting the ball because the energy is not lost due to bending.

The more flexible racquet would not maintain the amount of energy the ball first had before you hit it, but it would definitely offer greater control over the travel of the ball.

Professional and good amateur players prefer flexible racquets because they do not need to preserve the ball’s energy as they can hit the ball as hard as they require anyway. They would always be more interested in controlling the ball.

Of course, another factor related to this would be the material that the racquet is made from and the technology that has been used to manufacture it. These two elements should inform the buyer how flexible or stiff the tennis racquet really is.

If you are a novice tennis player or want to know more about the general psychology of tennis, please go to our website called Tennis Tips for Beginners

Golfing is a hands-on game. You will not learn how to play well by studying a video or playing a Nintendo game. You can watch all the pro golf games on TV you like, but can you remember how Tiger Woods did it when the ball is in front of you and the club is in your hands?

People make millions out of golf videos, golf tutorials and golf games, but few people have ever learned anything from them. You will learn much more by spending an hour with the club golfing pro.

If you truly would like a video to watch at home, why not create your own whilst you are spending an hour with the golfing pro? Take a kid with you to film your lesson on a camcorder.

The first suggestion for novices is to keep your eyes on the ball. This might sound obvious, but if you watch novices taking a shot, you will often see that they look away too early. This can result in a sliced stroke or even a miss. If you keep your eyes on the ball, you will not lose it either.

While putting, stand squarely above the ball. The ball should lay midway between your feet and your head ought to be directly above the ball. This also allows you to get a decent line of vision to the hole. The stroke should be smooth, with a graceful follow through.

Keeping the ball on the fairway is a problem for most new golfers. It appears all to easy to slice the ball into the rough. This has to do with your stance. A sliced ball is one that has been hit on its side, like putting side on a snooker ball to make it spin in that direction.

If you put side on a golf ball, it will spin in that direction and veer off in that direction as well. The answer to this problem, is to always hit the ball squarely will the centre of the blade of the club, unless you want it to curve in mid flight. That is for advanced players though. Novices should concentrate on learning how to hit the ball in a straight line.

Hooking the ball is a different difficulty altogether although the affect is comparable – that is that the ball goes off to the side. Hooking the ball has to do with swing and stance. It is usually the result of not driving the ball straight ahead of you, but slinging it to the opposite side of your dominant arm. That is, right-handed golfers will hook the ball to the left.

To right this, practice hitting the ball only a couple of yards into an upright bucket or a dog’s basket. Each day you ought to move the basket back a couple of feet until you can confidently chip almost each ball into the basket. Then go for power and endeavour to hit the ball from the tee onto the green.

This list includes both British born artists and those who were born elsewhere but did most of their most important creations in the U.K. The assortment is listed in chronological order by date of birth.

Max Beerbohm ( 1872 – 1956 )

Sir Henry Maximilian “Max” Beerbohm was born in London, son of a well-to-do Lithuanian-born grain merchant. His family gave him he nick-name of Max and that is what he signed himself in his work and was known as for the rest of his life.

Beerbohm was educated at Charterhouse School and Merton College, Oxford but finished without taking a degree as he was already well recognized as a caricaturist and humourist.

He had an incapacity to draw hands and feet but was very good at heads and his dandified figures with inflated heads quickly became his trade-mark. The Times newspaper in 1913 described him as ?the greatest of English comic artists and he was variously hailed as ?the English Goya? and “the greatest portrayer of personalities in the history of art?

Henry Bateman (1887 – 1970)

Bateman was born in New South Wales, Australia of English parents who returned to England soon after he was born. He studied art at Westminster School of Art and the Goldsmith Institute.

His style matured early in life and by the age of 17 it was already established. He achieved a contract with Tatler magazine but is best well-known for his ?The Man Who??.? series of cartoons. These showed hapless people who had committed mostly upper class social faux pas. ?The Man Who lit his Cigar before the Loyal Toast? is a prime instance.

Sir David Low (1891 – 1963)

Sir David Alexander Cecil Low was born in New Zealand and taught at Dunedin and Christchurch. He began his professional life in New Zealand and in fact his first effort was published while he was only 11 years of age.

He later moved to Australia and next to England and by 1927 was working for The Evening Standard. He is best remembered for his caricatures depicting Hitler and Mussolini both before and during World War II. In fact, generations of New Zealand school children learned about the beginning of the Second World War using textbooks illustrated by Low.

He was especially hated by Hitler and after the war it was uncovered that his name was in the ?Black Book? which listed those who the Nazis wished to arrest after they had conquered Britain.

Low was knighted in 1962, a year before his death. His obituary spoke of him as “the dominant cartoonist of the western world”

Ronald Searle (b. 1920)

Ronald William Fordham Searle was born in Cambridge and began drawing at the prodigiously early age of five and was working professionally by the age of 15. The War interrupted his art studies and he enlisted in the Royal Engineers .

He was serving in Singapore when he was captured by the Japanese. He was a prisoner of war for the remainder of the war eventually working on the notorious Siam-Burma ?Death Railway?. He created, in secret, many drawings depicting conditions in the camps which survived discovery by being concealed under the mattresses of dying prisoners.

He returned to England at the end of the war and produced a prodigious volume of work in the 1950?s and 60?s. However he is best known as the creator of ?St Trinians School?.

Gerald Scarfe (b. 1936)

Gerald Anthony Scarfe was born in London and as a child was severely asthmatic. During his early bed-ridden years he busied himself by drawing. He began his working life in advertising but by the early 60?s his caricatures were appearing in ?Private Eye? and this led to a job with the ?Daily Mail?.

But it was his work with the British rock group Pink Floyd for which he is most known particularly the illustration for the cover of their 1979 album ?The Wall?.

Searle also provided the caricatures for the opening and closing sequences of the well-liked BBC comedy ?Yes Minister? and in 1998 he drew caricatures of Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecombe, Joyce Grenfell, Les Dawson and Peter Cook which were shown on a set of five British postage stamps celebrating British comedians.

Millions of people love to swim in their gardens about the world. Swimming and playing in the water is immense fun, even if you have to go to a pond, pool, a river or the sea to do it. in order to make full use of a garden pool, you really need to live in a place where the weather is warm. The owner also needs to have some money as pool maintenance fees are high.

Therefore, when people have gone to the trouble of having a garden pool installed, they also like to have the pool used as frequently or as much as possible. You can encourage your friends and family to use the pool more often by making it more fun and more comfortable to do so. Pool accessories or swimming accessories are a means of achieving this.

People like to be in the water, so you could make it straightforward for them by using poolside furniture that will float while supporting an adult. There are various objects like floating chairs, floating tables and plastic inflatable lidos that will keep you and your guests in contact with the water. Decent floating furniture will also support people out of the water, cheap stuff will not.

If you like the concept of floating in your pool whilst sitting on a chair reading a book, this sort of furniture is for you. Lots of these seats have an in-built glass holder and float so that your waist is at the water line, although this really depends on the chair and the person sitting in it.

Then there are floating sun loungers which do more or less the same job as a floating chair, except they tend to keep your whole body out of the water so that you can get an even sun tan. Inflatable lidos or rafts are comparable objects, although the inflatable lido or camp bed is a very cheap device compared with the more solid floating seats and loungers.

Other objects that you could use to increase the enjoyment of your garden pool are aquatic games. You could string up a water polo net or a water volley ball net in order to get people moving. Beach balls are another good idea for encouraging play in the pool. If you are on your own, you could only float about in an inflated truck tyre. They are very comfortable and very cheap.

If you are dead set on relaxation at your pool, you could build a poolside bar. The bar stools could be in the water, if your pool is large enough, otherwise you could incorporate the pool bar into a breakfast bar where you can prepare and eat light meals. Weighty meals are not good for swimmers anyway.

Pool accessories or swimming accessories will heighten your enjoyment of your pool and make your friends and family wait for you next invitation to come around for a swim impatiently. Most of these items do not have to be expensive either.

Hawaii is a beautiful place, we have all seen the films and the vacation photos. The above ground scenery is stunning, but what not so many individuals know is that the sub-aqua scenery is equally as beautiful. The good thing is that you do not have to know precisely where to go to enjoy diving because the diving is good everywhere on the islands.

Not just is the sub-aqua scenery beautiful, but the water is warm too – all year through. You will find millions of fish, aquatic flora, coral and ship wrecks, everything that divers like to look at. There will never be a diver that regrets having gone on a diving holiday in Hawaii.

Would be divers can best study the hobby in Oahu. There are plenty of diving schools and instructors there that have the right to award a diving certificate after a day or two’s tuition. This is very fast, but the courses are thorough, so you can safely go shallow diving after earning your certificate. When shallow water diving, you will see plenty of fish, plants and coral.

There are also several wrecks at Oahu, so you will be able to investigate these too, if you have a little more experience. There are a number of huge ships down there and millions of fish.

One of the best locations to go scuba diving is Ka’awaloa Cove, which is in western Hawaii. The cove is only accessible by boat, but that is not difficult because there are several small boat companies that offer a ferry service. Kona is another great diving spot on the big island.

Both of these regions cater for both the greenhorn and the expert. Kona is thick with plankton, which may not sound interesting in itself, until you understand that the plankton attracts giant manta rays. The rays are especially spectacular when seen on dives at night.

Red Hill and Kona also offer excellent opportunities for diving because there are underwater lava flows. The lava flows are best seen by daylight because that is when the sun shines off them giving them their name of Red Hills. They are just accessible by boat, but then that is not a problem either.

The smaller island of Maui also has fantastic diving locations. Check out Molokini and its underwater volcanic crater. The crater is home for reef sharks, majestic sea turtles, many tropical marine fish and the spectacular giant manta rays again. This is one of the best dive sites on Hawaii and really has to be on your short list of must do dives.

The best thing about diving in Hawaii is that there is so much to see and do wherever you are situated. OK, the well-liked attractions are just that, very popular, but many people like being with plenty of other individuals – after all there is safety in numbers, but Hawaii also has quiet spots which you can discover if you look and the diving will be great there as well because the fish are the same and the water is as warm.

We are all more conscious of our health nowadays, almost certainly because fewer of us work hard physically any more, our diet of junk food has turned us into fat lumps and the health care industry is constantly warning us how unhealthy we are in order to sell us more drugs. Whatever the reasons, most people are trying more to take care of themselves.

There are different ways to attacking this problem of being unhealthy and some of the reason for this depends on why you are unhealthy and some of it on your personal approach to things. For instance, some people will know that they have got into an unhealthy rut and will make lifestyle changes like exercising more and eating more healthily, whereas others will buy a load of pills and hope that they work.

Then there is the middle road. We are busy and we do not all have an hour a day to spend at the gym and some of us could not work out even if we wished to. So, the middle way, might be to exercise as frequently as you can by hiking or practicing yoga at home; eating more healthy food, that is foodstuff that you can eat raw or that you cook yourself and by taking a few supplements.

Which supplements might you decide on? Well, that actually depends on your diet. There is not much point in taking calcium tablets if you eat cheese sandwiches for lunch, a T-bone steak for dinner and drink milk every day, but there might be a decent reason for taking calcium supplements if you are a vegan.

I have a friend who will not eat vegetables and especially greens, but, knowing that his diet lacks roughage amongst other things, he eats porridge for breakfast and snacks on fruit. Another friend hates fish, he cannot even look at it, but he is aware of the value of omega 3 essential fatty acids and so he takes it in the form of capsules. He almost certainly gets more omega 3 than I do and I love fish.

So, the first thing to do is note down everything that you eat for a week or two and then analyze what is lacking in your diet. The analysis might be above you, although it probably is not, but you could take your diary or food to your medical doctor or dietitian. It might surprise you a lot to find out exactly what you eat during a week.

As a point of interest, the majority of rural Thais do not eat beef or produce cheese or drink milk, so over the centuries they have added small bones to their diet. In the West if we get a small bone in our mouth, we tend to remove it, but a Thai will crunch it to tiny pieces and swallow it – fish bones, small bird bones, frogs bones. Not only does it replace the missing calcium but it keeps their teeth strong in a country that is only just developing dentistry for the masses.

Everybody knows that you have to train to learn how to do something better. This goes for playing tennis, writing, playing chess and martial arts. Especially in aggressive sports like martial arts, because you can be hurt, if you are not more proficient than your opponent. The most ferocious form of martial art is mixed martial arts.

Mixed martial arts is a mixture of all the other martial arts, so it permits the fighter to use the best moves from all the martial arts he or she knows. This has the effect that it is improbable that any two contestants will have precisely the same styles even if they have the same techers. In order to train in the right manner, it is crucial to use the correct clothing, safety gear and tools or weapons.

In fact, man-made weapons are not allowed in mixed martial arts, you may only use your body and limbs. However, there are also training devices like punch ball, punch bag and blocking pads. However, exactly what you need, relies on which martial arts you use in your mode of mixed martial arts.

Most students of mixed martial arts learn judo, Brazilian jiu jitsu, boxing, karate and wrestling. Some also learn aikido, kung fu and tae kwon do. This first thing that you will need is a gi, if you are practicing a traditional Eastern martial art.

The gi is the well-known white judo jacket, trousers and belt. Do not attempt to save money on these garments as they require to be tough to withstand grapples and throws that would tear low-priced clothing.

Women will need an equally tough training bra and men will need a box for lower protection. In mixed martial arts, it is normal to wear open fingered gloves. These permit the fighter to grip the adversary and supply protection from minor cuts and scratches, while not encumbering in the least. Therefore, they require to be completely flexible.

The punch bag is great for a heavy cardio work out. It ought to weigh at least 100 pounds and be five-six feet long by 12-18 inches in diameter. You can fill it with sand and suspend it from a rafter in the garage so that it approximately resembles an opponent. The punch bag is ideal for developing heavy punches and fast kicks.

The fighters in mixed martial arts bouts wear shorts not the gi, so women wear a sports bra and most men wear a box too. These items of clothing should be sturdy because your opponent will use them to throw you, so you cannot afford to stint on these garments.

It is sensible to protect your teeth by wearing a gum-shield and, in training at least, you should wear a helmet. It is a good idea to get approval for the type of protective gear that you are thinking of wearing particularly if you are new to mixed martial arts.

These easiest place to shop for these items and the equipment that you will need is probably in your gym as they will make certain that it is up to the necessary quality. When you understand what you require, you will find it less expensive to shop for it online.

Racing is the most exciting part of owning a radio controlled car for most RC car enthusiasts. There are millions of RC car racing aficionados, so it is normal that a number of different sorts of racing have developed, but the two main distinctions are on-road and off-road racing.

Whichever aspect of RC car racing interests you the most, there are a number of items that everyone has to do to prepare for a race. The rest of this piece will discuss some aspects of racing your radio controlled car.

We will assume that you already have the best model car that you can afford, so the first thing to do when preparing for a race is choose the tyres to match the conditions, exactly as they would in a full-size car race.

The tyres employed for on and off road racing are not the same and the tyres used for a dry or a wet road are not the same too, so you will need at least two sets of tyres and you will have to practice changing them quickly at pit stops.

Most significant on-road RC car racing is done with models of real cars like Lamborghinis, Porches, Ferraris and Aston Martins leading the way. Others like to use Formula One style cars. Off-road scrambling is usually done with trucks, heavier models that can acquire a better grip on the landscape.

So, the faster, lighter cars are constructed for speed and require a smoother surface to run on. The surfaces used vary from a length of regular concrete or tarmac road that has been closed off for the day to a custom built racing circuit of concrete or tarmac. Off-road vehicles are raced or scrambled anywhere, the rougher the better.

These conditions also affect the scale to a limited extent. Racing RC cars tend to be the smaller 1/10 th scale, whereas off-road trucks tend to be built to the slightly larger 1/8 th scale, because they need the weight for increased traction.

However, contemporary developments have seen the rise in popularity of huge 1/5 th scale tucks and cars with real miniature petrol engines in them.

Standard two-wheel drive is satisfactory for racing, although some racers do prefer four-wheel disk. However, four-wheel drive is more or less essential for all terrain racing. It is also preferable in wet and icy conditions, exactly like the real thing.

Fuel is an vital consideration. Most speed racing cars run on nitro. It burns very fast and produces high acceleration, but you have to stop and retank frequently in a long race. Some racers prefer petrol, especially in the larger, off-road trucks.

Petrol is not so ‘violent’ as nitro and it goes further. This means fewer pit stops. It also causes less wear and tear on the engine. Petrol engines do not break down as frequently as nitro engines. The parts are sturdier as well.

Maintenance is a big aspect of RC car racing, but it is more important the smaller your car is and nitro engines require the most maintenance of all. This is not difficult for many enthusiasts, in fact, they like taking their car apart and rebuilding it, but you might not. Maintenance is a factor to bear in mind when choosing an RC racing car.

Today, every schoolboy knows the story of William Webb Ellis, the Rugby School pupil “who with a fine disregard for the rules of football as played in his time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it”. The presentation trophy for the Rugby World Cup is known as the Webb Ellis trophy in his honour, and his “achievement” is honoured by a plaque at the school

There is only one problem with this story. It simply is not a fact. It was not until four years after the death of Webb Ellis in 1876 that the story first saw the light of day and its source is thought to come from a local antiquarian and previous Rugbeian Matthew Bloxam.

He was not a contemporary of Webb Ellis but says that the story was told to him by an unnamed source some 53 years after the incident is alleged to have happened.

In 1823, when the event is supposed to have happened, the rules of rugby had yet to be formulated and any alterations, such as the legality of carrying or running with the ball, were often agreed on an ad hoc basis a short time before the beginning of a game.

There were therefore no official rules for football during the time William Webb Ellis was at the school (1816-25). It was not until 1845, some 200 years after football was first played at Rugby School, that three pupils published the first written regulations of the game.

For many years it had been the boys, and not the masters who had set down the rules which were frequently modified by every new generation of students.

Guy’s Hospital Football Club, formed in London in 1843, by old boys from Rugby School, has strong claims to be the oldest football club in the world. It definitely predates by 14 years the creation of Sheffield FC, believed to be the oldest club playing association football.

In 1871, after a number of problematic disputes with the Football Association, 21 clubs met in London to create an association of those clubs ‘who play the rugby-type game’.

Consequently, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was formed. The first International rugby match was played on 27 March 1871 between England and Scotland. The English team wore white shirts ornamented with a red rose and the Scots brown shirts with a thistle. (Scotland won the game).

The worries and conflicts regarding amateurism and professionalism had long proved a thorny topic. The representatives of Yorkshire and Lancashire are credited with bringing in rules concerning amateurism in 1879.

These rules were finally formalized by the RFU in 1886. It is broadly believed that the northern clubs were in favour of the professional game whereas these northern bodies were robust proponents of amateurism,

However, conflict arose over the controversy regarding ‘broken time’, the issue of whether players ought to receive reimbursement for taking time off work to play.

The northern clubs had a substantial number of working class players who had either to miss games due to working commitments, or forego their wages in order to play rugby. By 1892, this subject of broken time payments was difficult not only for northern clubs such as Bradford and Leeds but also for clubs in the south.

It became an anxiety of the RFU: these broken time repayments would become a quick path to professionalism.

On 29 August 1895, 20 clubs from Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire met at the George Hotel, Huddersfield and decided to resign from the RFU and create the Northern Rugby Football Union, which from 1922 became the Rugby Football League.

The quarrel about payment was one which at the time was also affecting soccer and cricket. Each game had to work out a compromise; rugby’s position was the most radical. Amateurism was strictly enforced, and anyone accepting payment for playing rugby league was disqualified.

However, on 26 August 1995 the International Rugby Board declared rugby union an “open” game and thereby removed all restrictions on payments or benefits to those connected with the game.

It did this because of a committee conclusion that to do so was the only manner to end the hypocrisy of sham amateurism and to keep control of rugby union. The wheel had turned full circle.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many topics, but is at present involved with the London 2012 Olympics mascot.

If you would like to get into some form of motor sport, but are absolutely appalled by the costs involved, maybe you have overlooked Go Kart Racing. All right, nothing is cheap anymore, but go karting is comparatively cheap in comparison with its far dearer cousins like Formula One, Formula Drifting, NASCAR and Cross Country Rallying. You can get into go kart racing as a spectator, as an investor in a team or as a member of an active team as a mechanic or driver.

Or you could use go kart racing as a spring board into the dearer kinds of motor sport. You can learn a lot about driving, designing and constructing cars by beginning with go karts. After all, the principals are basically the same, but the components in karts are a great deal cheaper.

In the rest of this piece, we will take a look at some of the components and safety aspects of go karts along with approximate average prices.

The first thing you will have to examined is the sort of kart you would like. There are different degrees as there are in other motor sports. as a beginner, you really ought to begin with the low powered karts, because you will have to learn a great deal of new driving skills and quite a few safety rules before you move on to more highly-rated karts.

If you find the price of a new kart a bit high or if you want to leap-frog over the lower levels of karting as quickly as possible, you could think about buying a second hand kart for the first few stages, only purchasing a new one once you get to the level of karting that you want to be at. However, do not make the mistake of attempting to run before you can walk.

Entry level go karts are not expensive. For example, at the time of writing, a battery operated go kart costs about $300-$400+ while a petrol powered kart will be $600-$700+

Although go karts have a very low centre of gravity so do not tip over easily, it can happen and crashes do occur so wearing the correct safety clothing is vital. Again, you could purchase a second hand set of racing safety clothes, which are in essence the same as for motorbiking, if you just want to get going on the cheap.

You will require a jacket and trousers or a one-piece jump suit; a helmet, gloves, a neck-collar and boots. This little lot could set you back anywhere between $300 and $400, but it will save broken bones or worse, particularly in the period a few months after you start when you think that you know it all. Accidents occur when people become over confident.

You will also require a couple of common spare parts, a spare tyre, fuel and oil, say $250 and you are ready to take your first lessons in your own go kart. Or maybe you would rather learn in someone else’s kart first? This is not a bad idea, because it will give you some experience with different forms of karts, which will help you make a decision which one you would like (or can afford).

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on a number of topics, but is now concerned with how to compare tyre prices.
