Hand Held Bug Zapper

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

If you aren’t already familiar with the electric bug killer, you are really going to like it and if you have had one before, I’m sure you’ll welcome it back like an old friend! The electric insect killer does just what it says: it zaps bugs. But it does it really, really well.

Any insect that comes into contact with the hand held bug zapper is electrocuted. Smaller insects like gnats and mosquitoes are vaporized with a very pleasing flash and a crack. Larger bug, like house flies and wasps die, but don’t explode like the smaller ones.

Just how many times have these flying bugs taken the edge off an otherwise enjoyable evening in the garden? Or how many times have you not been able to get a decent night’s sleep, because you know there’s at least one mosquito in the bedroom. It has happened to me hundreds of times, I know! It is very satisfying to get one’s own back with the hand held bug zapper.

I don’t relish killing anything unnecessarily - I’m married to a Buddhist- but mosquitoes? I’m sorry, they can die. And the handheld insect zapper dispatches them without any messing about. No waiting and hoping they’ll fly into the ultraviolet light and then into the mesh. No, one sweep of the handheld bug killer and the mosie’s gone and you can hear whether you killed her or not. (I say her, because the sucking mosquitoes always are females - honest, I wasn’t being sexist).

There are two basic kinds of hand held insect killer. There’s the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric bug zapper. Both work on the same principle, but I prefer the rechargeable type, although I guess you could use rechargeable batteries too. (I bet they would be more expensive that the bug zapper in the first place). Anyway, I have been using a electronic insect zapper of the rechargeable kind for five years and I am ecstatic about them.

Now-a-days, I spend a lot of time in northern Thailand with my wife, so you can bet your life that I give my electric insect zapper a good work-out almost every night. We usually eat in the garden in the evening and all socializing is done outside by tradition, especially in the rural areas, where we live, so it comes in real handy. I also use my electric bug killer to ’sweep’ the bedroom for bugs before we retire at night, just like a CIA agent.

The hand held bug killer just gets better and better every time I buy one, which makes it hard to give you definite specifications. The electronic bug zappers I used four or five years ago, sometimes failed within 6-9 months of purchase, although their ability to hold a charge reduced a lot after 4-5 months.

However, the new hand held insect zapper will last 9-12 months and still be very pokey after nine months. My latest one even has a powerful torch called a headlamp built into it. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be for, but if you feel that vengeance is sweet, you can lure mosquitoes with it and then kill them with your hand held bug zapper.

Killing Common Indoor Bugs

Monday, February 15th, 2010

The common indoor bugs we see all over the world are flies, spiders, fleas and beetles. No-one likes to have insects indoors, so most people go to almost any lengths to eradicate these common indoor bugs. Less common indoor bugs may be woodlice, earwigs, scorpions and millipedes or centipedes, although they are not less unwelcome.

It does not matter where you are in the world, it is very hard to keep these common indoor bugs outside, unless you go to the extremes of keeping all your windows and doors closed at all times, which is quite impossible. I live in Thailand and I know that this is not an option.

So, just what can you do about it? Well, let’s sort out all the flying bugs first, as of all the common indoor bugs, I find them the most obnoxious indoor bug. They are very irritating, buzzing around your head and mosquitoes and other flies can produce irritating sores and besides that, all flies spread disease. I cannot bear to see them walking on food, knowing that they have probably just come off some dog’s muck somewhere and now they are spitting on my food in order to taste it with their stinking feet!

My first line of defence is fine-mesh door and widow screens. They are not dear and can be added retrospectively to any window. My window meshes slide, so they can cover only one half of a window at a any one time, but I do not find that a problem. You can still create cross-winds, by opening two or more windows at opposite ends of a room. I love to see the flies on the mesh struggling to get in by day and the mosquitoes doing the same by night. At night, it is wise to turn on as little light indoors as possible in order not to attract these common indoor bugs.

My second line of defence is natural predators - lizards, like Geckos (Jin Jok, in Thai). Some people don’t like them in the house much either and I can’t say that I’m all that keen on them indoors myself, but they are hard to keep outside and they do consume hundreds, if not thousands, of indoor bugs every day. I particularly like to see them lying in wait on the outside of the mesh, ready to pounce on any bug trying to wriggle its way through the wires.

My third line of defence is an indoor bug zapper. You know, the electric, handheld bug zapper that looks like a child’s tennis racquet. They are fantastic at trapping and destroying any flying indoor bug. The bug literally explodes and vaporizes on contact with the fully-charged wires of the indoor bug zapper. If you haven’t tried using one, you really should. They are most satisfying. These three defences keep our house pretty much free of flies.

The crawling common indoor insects are not so much of a problem really. Door screens on self-closers will keep 99% of them out and the Geckos will help too. Spiders can get in fairly easily, but then, I don’t mind them too much as long as they stay away from me, as they eat other bugs too. They are on our side really. However, for those who can not bear to trap them and throw them outside, the handheld indoor bug zapper works well on spiders too.

Sometimes, Fleas can be a problem, if you have cats or dogs, but then if you wash or dust the animal once a month, you should be able to keep these common indoor bugs under control quite easily. However, there are two final methods that we use. Once a week, before we go out for the day, we spray every room with fly killer and every six-months we spray any rugs or carpets with a bug killer containing permethrin, which will survive washing and vacuuming for that long without losing its ability to kill common indoor bugs on contact. If you stick with these methods, you will be able to keep your home or office quite free of the most common indoor bugs and any less common indoor bug as well.

Have you ever heard of an indoor bug zapper? If you haven’t, or if you want to get an indoor bug zapper, please click one of the links to our web site or blog.

Using Self Tanning Sprays

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

The tanned appearance is both popular and all the rage more now than at any time for decades; people like the brownish luminosity of their skin as it makes them feel fashionable and self-confident. However, at the same time, sun bathing is less and less prudent because of the rise in the quantity of skin cancer injuries. Therefore, substitutes to it have and still are being developed. Artificial tanning using tanning beds or sunless tanning by artificial means such as body lotions, creams, gels or self tanning spray are generally obtainable.

Even though the most advanced technique of achieving a tan is the use of a tanning bed or tanning booth, not everybody can afford to purchase their own machine or go to a salon four times a month in order to get their tan refreshened, so the do-it-yourself methods have become more and more popular.

A self tanning spray is a beauty product frequently containing DHA that can be applied at home as a sunless tanning solution. DHA is a chemical that causes a reaction with the skin’s amino acids, which in turn causes the turning of the top layer of skin a brown colour. The effect of a self tanning spray lasts for approximately six or eight days, if you are wise not to take too long in the shower, if you shun using too a harsh soap and if you do not rub yourself too hard with the towel.

Self tanning is not without a number of challenges and so, while it is less expensive than treatment in a commercial tanning salon, it is also more tricky to get a satisfactory outcome. It is more complicated to get an even tan when using a self tanning spray. The coloring solution needs to be atomized in a fine film with immense care not to overlap too much. Overlapping leads to darker tan shades on some body areas.

Therefore, another drawback of the self tanning spray is that you may require another person’s assistance for the process. The back for example is very tricky to spray unless there is someone to assist you. The same difficulty presents itself for the back of the legs, the nape of the neck and the bottom. If you ask a friend to assist you with the tanning, it will make the process a lot simpler.

You must be particularly careful to safeguard your eyes, your lips, ears and other sensitive body parts. It is also possible to stain your nails and palms when using a self tanning spray. You could remove this difficulty by using gloves or wet wipes whenever necessary so as not to allow the tanning agent to dry on the palms or your hands or your nails.

Then, last but not least, do not spray too much liquid on your body, because the consequence may be an unnatural orange glow or a somewhat uneven tan. Although many people often use these cans of self tanning spray in its assorted forms, there is no question about it that they are a lower quality resolution when compared to the superior, but more expensive tanning bed or tanning booth.

Tanning bulbs are ultraviolet-emitting units that act as the primary component of the different types of tanning beds and booths on the market. Tanning bed bulbs have as their main use the enhancement of a cosmetic tan, although these bulbs also have a reputation for the successful treatment of eczema and psoriasis. The depth and type of the tan produced, depends on the spectrum of light emitted by the tanning lamps and the vast majority of them give out more ultraviolet light than the sun does.

Nearly all tanning lamps use a device called a ‘ballast’ to regulate their power consumption. The ballast stabilizes the flow of electrical current inside the lamp and is required to ensure that the bulbs use only the necessary amount of wattage that they need in order to work effectively.

There are various types of sunbed lamps on the market including reflector sunbed bulbs and high output lamps. Most bulbs fall into two main categories: high pressure and low pressure types. (Within the tanning industry, it is customary to refer to high pressure tanning lamps as bulbs and low pressure tanning bulbs as lamps). Both high and low pressure tanning bulbs require a lack of oxygen in its housing.

High pressure tanning bulbs range in length from three to five inches and operate with 250 to 2,000 watt ballasts, although 400 watt high pressure tanning bulbs are the most common. They are usually included in the face tanning compartment of a tanning bed. High pressure tanning bulbs are most often manufactured from quartz glass and an extra specialized coating, which is essential to filter out the lethal UVC ultraviolet rays.

These HP tanning bulbs, containing mercury or argon, produce ultraviolet light in high concentration. Handling high pressure tanning bulbs requires a great deal of care, because even a tiny amount of oil from your hands will cause the bulb to fail prematurely. High pressure tanning bulbs should be replaced after about 1,000 hours even though they will shine for up to ten times longer.

Low pressure tanning lamps are much like normal fluorescent tubes, but the glass tube of low pressure tanning bulbs naturally filters out the harmful UVC ultraviolet rays. Low pressure bulbs have a useful lifespan of between 600 and 1,600 hours with 1,000 hours being the norm again.

Tanning Booths

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

It is a well-known fact of life that a lot of people want to get a great celebrity tan just as if they had been soaking up the sun on a private beach in California. You would be able to get an all over tan with no clothing or strings to restrict the tanning process on your private beach. But private beaches do not come cheap, do they? Buying a tanning booth is one the several different ways that you can make use of to get the all over tan that you require.

These tanning booths are quite similar in design to the tanning booths which are very popular in commercial tanning enterprises. As with tanning beds, there are many brands of tanning booths on the market for both commercial and domestic tanning bed equipment. So, you will have to look into these diverse tanning booth systems meticulously in order to find one that suits you and your budget. There are nevertheless a few notes of concern that you should bear in mind when selecting your tanning booth.

When you are using tanning booths, you will discern that these booths use very high temperature ultra violet bulbs to rapidly bring about the alterations your skin will have to go through in a tanning session in order to become bronzed. Just as when using tanning beds, you will need to use some protective eye glasses when inside the tanning booths. These goggles will shield your eyes from getting hurt by the powerful, but injurious ultra violet rays.

On the other hand, if these ultra violet rays are quite so hazardous, why do people choose to subject themselves to such protracted periods in tanning booths? Well, the response is really fairly plain, it is just because of the fact that people like to have a beautiful, bronze coloured skin. Another point is that, since there is so much dreadful news published about the dangers of sun tanning, it is simple to understand why some people prefer to try the sunless tanning path instead.

Which is where tanning booths, among other items, come into their own. However, having mentioned a few details and dangers, if you are still thinking about getting a sunless tan then you may be interested in reading the advantages of using a tanning booth. The first advantage is that you can get a tan whenever you like. The second advantage is that the tanning booths take up less room than tanning beds as they stand in a vertical attitude.

Nevertheless, before you go out to purchase a tanning booth, it is a first-rate idea if you read what other people have had to say about the items. If you still believe that tanning booths hold the answer to your prayers, then there is a wide choice of tanning booths for you to look at.

Once you get your tanning booth installed in a spare room, you will never look back. The simplicity of use and being able to fit your tanning sessions in no matter what time of the day or night you like is of immeasurable advantage.

How to Treat Acne Successfully

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Acne is horrible. However, it’s not something that cannot be tackled. There are heaps of acne skin care products around. We can pigeonhole acne skin care products into 3 broad categories -

* Preventive or general acne skin care products; * Over-the-counter, specialised acne skin care items; * Prescription only acne skin care products.

The general acne skin care products are the ones that are used as an acne-prevention measure. These include cleansers, make-up removers and similar products that help avoid acne. In the real sense, these acne skin care products are those that should be part of your daily routine anyway. However, some of these are more oriented to work like an acne skin care product.

These acne skin care products act against the reasons for acne e.g. limiting the production of sebum/oil and avoiding the congestion of skin pores. Basically, these acne skin care products inhibit the oil from getting trapped in the skin and hence impede the growth of the bacteria that lead to acne. Broad-spectrum acne skin care items also take in exfoliation products like skin peels. These work by removing dead skin cells, thereby reducing the likelihood of pore-clogging and bacteria increase.

Then there are specialised acne skin care products that are available over-the-counter i.e. without the requirement of a prescription. These include products like vanishing creams which remove the extra oil from the skin. Most of these acne skin care items are based on benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, both of which are the enemies of bacteria (and hence acne too). You must start with a product that has a lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide (e.g. 5%) and see how your skin responds to it.

Alpha-hydroxy-acid based moisturizers are also common as acne skin care items. You may have to test a few, before you find the acne skin care product that is most effective for you. If nothing seems to work, you should contact a skincare specialist.

Prescription-only acne skin care products are the ones that are prescribed by a dermatologist. These include ointments that can be rubbed on the affected area or oral antibiotics or just any topical medication. Dermatologists might also recommend a minor surgical procedure to remove the contents of pustules. However, never try to squeeze or do this by yourself, it can lead to the everlasting damage of your skin.

Your doctor could also prescribe a hormone-based treatment (since hormonal changes are also known to cause acne). Such acne skin care items are known to be very effective in some cases. So, with all those acne skin care items, combatting acne is really not all that arduous.
