Picnic Or Barbecue?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Are you thinking of holding a party in the near future, but are not sure whether to have a picnic in the park or a barbecue party at home? People do enjoy both kinds of party, although some may have a preference. One of the big differences between a picnic and a barbecue is often the food.

After all, you are usually allowed to have a barbecue and cook food in your own backyard, but there may be restrictions on cooking food on an open fire in a park or picnic site for fire safety purposes, so most people take pre-cooked meats and sandwiches.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of party, but we will begin by looking at the food aspect, as most parties centre around food. An advantage of having a picnic is that you will be able to muck in with your fellow revellers more, because you will have already cooked the chicken wings and legs and made the sandwiches the night before.

You will have bags of sausage rolls and small cakes and all you will have to do is put them out for people to help themselves. If you run out of sandwiches, people can make their own with the sliced bread that you will have brought just in case.

The disadvantages of a picnic are that you also have to tie your time up the day before making all the food and you will need transport to get there with your hampers, bottles, flasks, plates, beakers, tissues, flannels towels and whatever else you normally take with you. People may not even like your selection of sandwiches and if you let them make their own with what you provide, there could be a terrible mess. Your sandwiches could also curl up overnight of go off in the heat of the day or in the back of the car. This is a particular danger with pork, chicken and eggs.

You may have to erect a tent or rig up a shelter for those who can not stand strong sunlight. You may also have trouble with ants and wasps and the toilet amenities are often dreadful. Also if it begins to rain, you have little option but to pack up and depart for home or a pub

Barbecue food on the other hand is cooked there and then and cannot go off. The only danger is under cooking, but it is not too hard to get it right. There is not much chance of preparing vast quantities more than you need either as the chef will see when his food is not being taken away.

This is one of the disadvantages of barbecuing though, someone has to stand there all day and cook, although this can be done in turns and there is usually a bunch of men willing to show off their prowess as a barbecue chef.

With a barbecue you have the advantage of cover if it rains and the toilets are better than in the park and if it gets chilly later on in the evening, you could use a patio heater to extend the party.

Patios, Decks And Accessories

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Would it not be lovely, at the end of a hard day’s work or on your day off, to relax outdoors on your patio deck? It is a daydream that many people have. But it does not have to be only a dream. You could be actually doing it within a few of weeks. You can either make the deck or patio yourself, if you are useful with your hands or you can hire someone in.

The best thing to do is speak with your contractor about your plans about size and materials. If you want to have a go at making it yourself, take the measurements to your local builders’ merchant and get them to give you a quote. If you need it, they can usually suggest a contractor to you. This can be a good idea, even if it is only to get an idea about cost.

There are also lots of ’standard’ plans available too. You could get a few gardening magazines, you will be able to tell the ones you want by their titles. You could also look online. There is also designing software for this type of project, it just depends what you want your input to be.

You could just hand the whole task over to your builder, if that is what you want. However, I would go for a drink with my wife and take paper and pens. Over a drink or two, I would encourage us both to make a few rough plans of what we would like. Then you can discuss and amalgamate the plans.

You also have to decide whether you want a raised deck or one at ground level. A raised, wooden deck might help keep the snakes at bay, but a stone patio puts you right in the middle of your garden and flowers.

A consideration, depending on where you live, could be the use of patio heaters. If you think that you may have to use patio heating at certain times of the year because of the weather, you might not want your patio deck made of wood. After spending time and money on your new patio deck, you will want to make use of it whether it is a bit chilly or not, which is where the heaters come in.

Furthermore, patio heaters are not that pricey any more and not that dear to run. If you add a mosquito trap and some lighting, you will have a pleasure to enjoy for the rest of your life.

The Perfect Barbecue Party

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

The three most essential components of any barbecue party are the guests, the weather and the food. I can not make suggestions about your friends and family, you are on your own there, but I hope you will find my suggestions for the other two fronts practical.

An impromptu party in the garden is great and often the best parties are the ones that just happen off the cuff, but if you want something a little more formal or more impressive then you have to organize. The first step is to pick a date far enough in the future for most people to be unlikely to have a previous engagement, but not so far that they might forget about your barbecue party.

Depending on where you live of course, try to pick a date when it is unlikely to be cool or wet. This is hard in places like the UK, but may be simpler where you live. If the party goes on into the night it may get cool anyway and you could hire a few gas patio heaters in advance just in case. You could also have a sunshade or sheltered seating area in case of blazing sunshine or a light shower.

These days many people are vegetarian and you will have to plan in advance for them and other dieters, if they make up a sizable number of your guests. You could send out RSVP invitations and ask your guests to make known any special dietary requirements. I am not really suggesting that you have to cater to everybody, but if you have a lot of Jews or Arabs coming you will need to provide an alternative to pork chops and of course there are other minorities too.

In fact, you may have to do some research on the religions of the people coming to your barbecue party, because often cooking utensils may not have touched pork of meat or shellfish. Most people of the guests with these dietary requirements will have been in this situation before and will understand if you go some way to providing an alternative.

For this reason, you will need to get your RSVP cards back at least a week before your barbecue party and do a bit of research on the telephone or the Internet. Then start making up the barbecue side dishes. These should include baked or and boiled jacket potatoes and potato salad, baked beans, egg quarters and coleslaw along with pickles, relish, onions, chutneys tomato and curry sauces (hot and not so hot), as most people will eat them. These can be prepared a few days in advance and kept in Tupperware containers in the fridge. Bread in the form of buns is also essential so that people can make sandwiches.

It is imperative for a polished act, to have your party area fully prepared before your guests turn up. it is a good idea to set the music system up in the garden shed or the garage to save it from any sudden shower. Provide plenty of tissues for wiping greasy fingers and plenty of receptacles for the debris. Finger bowls with lemon water would be a good idea for this purpose too.

Speed Reading

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

What have you been reading lately? At a meeting, you can tell who the broad-spectrum readers are. Wide readers often think and speak well. They win the admiration, respect, and good opinion of others. After all, reading broadens the mind. In fact, many people consider it one of the most satisfying pleasures of mankind, combining, as it does, mental agility and physical relaxation way above the scale of television.

The act of reading is primarily a mental activity. After all, you read with your mind and use your imagination to paint the setting of the action thriller you are reading. You use your mind to imagine the pain that the main characters are experiencing as the story unfolds; or you bring into play the different arguments and ideas brought up by the author of that self-help book you are holding.

Reading effectively helps you to develop a wide range of vocabulary by reading various kinds of books. A skillful reader recognizes a wide range of vocabulary. The reader may not understand exactly what every word means, but he/she will have a good idea of what the sentence is trying to say.

Reading makes you more alert and more curious about new words. Some readers develop ‘the dictionary habit’, which means that every time they come across a new word, they try to figure out what it possibly means from the context. If they cannot do this, they refer to the dictionary.

Similarly, reading develops intellectual curiosity by exposing the reader to different subjects. He/she learns to read by reading books of increasing difficulty and variety. Just as in other kinds of education, he/she is learning by actually doing and while he/she is reading he/she is automatically learning about the subject matter of the book too - a free by-product!

Reading teaches you to have an active and open mind. Merely understanding the writers idea is not enough, you have to make a positive response to what you read. Be an active, not a passive, reader. Develop the habit of drawing your own conclusions, the habit of active thinking, of agreeing or disagreeing with the author. Always keep your mind open; understand and weigh the ideas that you read. A practical part of active reading is the drawing of conclusions.

Now let me mention the idea of speed reading. All of the above applies between three and ten times over, because speed readers can read that much faster than the average reader! Consider that! - Being able to read, understand and remember all those books and articles. You would surely become well-read in your subject much more rapidly than others. Just imagine how that could help you at work, in school or in college …

Now, let me tell you the four primary rules for better reading and better comprehension:

1) Try to read more and more every month. Remember the saying that practice makes perfect. 2) Develop the habit of reading for main ideas. Look for the subject and predicate. Do not waste time on details or little words. 3) Learn to read with focus and concentration. Think of what you are reading. Do not let your attention wander somewhere else. Good readers read with understanding. 4) Learn to budget your time. Experiment with your reading time. Try purposely to read faster. Give yourself a time limit on a specific piece that you are reading.

Reading is a wonderfully stimulating mental activity. It expands your understanding and capability. You really have so much to gain by learning the joy of reading. So, go ahead and get down a book right today.

Are You a Separated Dad? So, What? Dating for Single Dads is Easy!

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Are you a divorced dad? So what? As long as dating for single dads is easy! Can a divorced Dad be a great father? Perhaps a divorced guy should also ask: “Why not?” Just because you’re not divorced, it does not mean that you are not a great father. It’s really such a pity that our society considers someone as a dead beat parent just because he’s divorced. There are a lot of wonderful divorced fathers out there and you can learn a lot from them.

Understanding it. You have got to realise that children suffer a great deal from the consequences of having only one parent. It could have from irate parents, from separation anxiety or any number of things: it’s a tough world out there for children whose parents are divorced, getting divorced, or who are just single.

Appearing to carry on as normal for the kids require sacrifice. Usually, both mother and father have to be able to set aside their differences long enough to inspect the damage that they have both done to their children. More often than not though, parents get so engrossed with their emotional grief, that they fail to notice that their children are suffering even more than they are.

If you are a single parent this is even more difficult. Dating for Dads and dating for mothers is the answer - don’t rush into things, but children need two parents and when you’re ready, you should get another partner.

Investigations show that when both parents make a deliberate effort to stay friendly to each other, then they will have more successful and stable children. What else do you need to know? Kids require a parent of each sex. Never think that dating for single dads or single mother is out of the question. In fact, it is important for the children. But you knew that already, didn’t you?

Case Study: To make clear the importance of a father’s closeness to his children more obvious, it should be stated that the State University of Arizona conducted a study of college students who had only one parent. The researchers observed personality, emotional and mental maturity, health, and even interest in school and success. The researchers found evidence that supports the idea that whichever parent had primary custody, it is certain that children need access to adults of both sexes. Widow(er)s need to get back into society for the sake of their children and the, selves.

Findings: The findings are very interesting. Statistics clearly shows that children whose parents are divorced have healthier and more mature relationships than their parents and make a conscious effort of keeping the essence of family intact.

61% of the kids involved in the study asserted that their mum or whoever had primary custody, moved them at least an hours drive away from the other parent. One of the concerns expressed by the students was getting in the crossfire. When they stay with one parent, future financial help (like for college) lessened. Example, if they stayed with dad, mom gives less when college comes, and vice versa. In fact, the investigation showed that the 1 hour driving distance already had a negative effect on the children.

Emotional upheaval cannot be avoided, but a keener inspection of the kids showed that those whose parents kept them close have a healthier disposition emotionally and mentally.

Summary: All in all, the case study shows that divorce does affect children. The way the parents treat each other and the distance they live from their children does have a significant impact that could determine whether the child succeeds or not. It is difficult to make friends with an ex-wife after all that has been said and done, but it will be more difficult for you as a divorced dad, when in the future, you see your children suffer the consequences of your actions.

As a separated Dad, it is your responsibility, to yourself and your children to make the supreme sacrifice of making the first step of keeping close.

Divorced men are in high demand, so if you want to know who’s looking for you in your town, please go to our web site http://dating.the-real-way.com

Hand Held Bug Zapper

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

If you aren’t already familiar with the electric bug killer, you are really going to like it and if you have had one before, I’m sure you’ll welcome it back like an old friend! The electric insect killer does just what it says: it zaps bugs. But it does it really, really well.

Any insect that comes into contact with the hand held bug zapper is electrocuted. Smaller insects like gnats and mosquitoes are vaporized with a very pleasing flash and a crack. Larger bug, like house flies and wasps die, but don’t explode like the smaller ones.

Just how many times have these flying bugs taken the edge off an otherwise enjoyable evening in the garden? Or how many times have you not been able to get a decent night’s sleep, because you know there’s at least one mosquito in the bedroom. It has happened to me hundreds of times, I know! It is very satisfying to get one’s own back with the hand held bug zapper.

I don’t relish killing anything unnecessarily - I’m married to a Buddhist- but mosquitoes? I’m sorry, they can die. And the handheld insect zapper dispatches them without any messing about. No waiting and hoping they’ll fly into the ultraviolet light and then into the mesh. No, one sweep of the handheld bug killer and the mosie’s gone and you can hear whether you killed her or not. (I say her, because the sucking mosquitoes always are females - honest, I wasn’t being sexist).

There are two basic kinds of hand held insect killer. There’s the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric bug zapper. Both work on the same principle, but I prefer the rechargeable type, although I guess you could use rechargeable batteries too. (I bet they would be more expensive that the bug zapper in the first place). Anyway, I have been using a electronic insect zapper of the rechargeable kind for five years and I am ecstatic about them.

Now-a-days, I spend a lot of time in northern Thailand with my wife, so you can bet your life that I give my electric insect zapper a good work-out almost every night. We usually eat in the garden in the evening and all socializing is done outside by tradition, especially in the rural areas, where we live, so it comes in real handy. I also use my electric bug killer to ’sweep’ the bedroom for bugs before we retire at night, just like a CIA agent.

The hand held bug killer just gets better and better every time I buy one, which makes it hard to give you definite specifications. The electronic bug zappers I used four or five years ago, sometimes failed within 6-9 months of purchase, although their ability to hold a charge reduced a lot after 4-5 months.

However, the new hand held insect zapper will last 9-12 months and still be very pokey after nine months. My latest one even has a powerful torch called a headlamp built into it. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be for, but if you feel that vengeance is sweet, you can lure mosquitoes with it and then kill them with your hand held bug zapper.

Have you ever used a handheld bug zapper? If not, or if you want to get a handheld bug zapper, please click one of the hyperlinks to our web site or blog.

Benefits of Stopping Smoking

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Giving up an addiction which you’ve had almost all of your life is be very hard. Many smokers who want to quit their unhealthy habit hesitate because they feel that it’s too late or it’s too hard for them to stop. Luckily this is not true. It’s never too late to change any bad habit.

The complete process of stopping smoking will probably take a long time and will require dedication and courage by the smoker. However, although at first it may be hardl to step away from being addicted to nicotine, as a smoker who wants to quit, it is better to focus on the long-term benefits of stopping smoking.

It’s a well-known fact that smoking is the cause of many all sorts of cancers and illnesses. Doctors say that each time a person smokes a cigarette, he or she is losing some of their life span, health, money and also respect. We live in a society of many anti-smoking institutions working to ban smoking that smokers are generally not seen in a favourable light. So why not consider the benefits of quitting smoking and lose your addiction instead of losing everything for the sake of a cigarette?

As they say, ‘health is wealth’ and one of the biggest benefits of quitting smoking is improved health. It really does not matter whether you’ve smoked for a few of years or have been a chain smoker for 30 years. What does matter is that you have decided to quit and commencing from this point, you will live a richer life with fewer illnesses and less time in a doctor’s surgery.

The benefits of quitting smoking are not only an increased health and an increase in life expectancy, but it can also have a positive effect on social life - you will have more friends and more (self) respect. Once a smoker quits this deadly habit he or she will run less risk of developing cancer or heart disease and it will also mean that the ex-smoker will breathe fresher air instead of air polluted with cigarette smoke, which will mean far less coughing and breathlessness.

The benefits of stopping smoking are almost boundless. For instance, smoking can have an adverse effect on sexual health, dumping the habit would mean an increase in fertility rate. Moreover, unlike in the past, you’ll have whiter teeth, fresher breath and a higher energy level. Furthermore, family and friends will have fresh air to breathe at last. Another benefit is the savings in your wallet. Cigarettes are very costly, therefore, quitting smoking would mean that the money that was spent on cigarettes could be used for other good causes like as treating yourself to a little bit of what you fancy.

The benefits of stopping smoking are certainly many and the plus-points of smoking are yet to be discovered. For sure, it brings in a lot of tax revenue and keeps some people in gainful employment, but then smokers also take more time off sick and spend more time at the doctor’s than their non-smoking colleagues. Smokers reply that it calms their nerves, but so would other relaxation techniques such as yoga even sitting down. Let’s face it, public opinion has moved against smoking with smokers more often than not being vilified and pitied these days. Smokers also look rather silly nipping out of the office, restaurant or pub for a cigarette every hour or so, don’t they?

If you are thinking about trying how to quit smoking cigarettes, please go over to our website now at: Quitting Smoking

Killing Common Indoor Bugs

Monday, February 15th, 2010

The common indoor bugs we see all over the world are flies, spiders, fleas and beetles. No-one likes to have insects indoors, so most people go to almost any lengths to eradicate these common indoor bugs. Less common indoor bugs may be woodlice, earwigs, scorpions and millipedes or centipedes, although they are not less unwelcome.

It does not matter where you are in the world, it is very hard to keep these common indoor bugs outside, unless you go to the extremes of keeping all your windows and doors closed at all times, which is quite impossible. I live in Thailand and I know that this is not an option.

So, just what can you do about it? Well, let’s sort out all the flying bugs first, as of all the common indoor bugs, I find them the most obnoxious indoor bug. They are very irritating, buzzing around your head and mosquitoes and other flies can produce irritating sores and besides that, all flies spread disease. I cannot bear to see them walking on food, knowing that they have probably just come off some dog’s muck somewhere and now they are spitting on my food in order to taste it with their stinking feet!

My first line of defence is fine-mesh door and widow screens. They are not dear and can be added retrospectively to any window. My window meshes slide, so they can cover only one half of a window at a any one time, but I do not find that a problem. You can still create cross-winds, by opening two or more windows at opposite ends of a room. I love to see the flies on the mesh struggling to get in by day and the mosquitoes doing the same by night. At night, it is wise to turn on as little light indoors as possible in order not to attract these common indoor bugs.

My second line of defence is natural predators - lizards, like Geckos (Jin Jok, in Thai). Some people don’t like them in the house much either and I can’t say that I’m all that keen on them indoors myself, but they are hard to keep outside and they do consume hundreds, if not thousands, of indoor bugs every day. I particularly like to see them lying in wait on the outside of the mesh, ready to pounce on any bug trying to wriggle its way through the wires.

My third line of defence is an indoor bug zapper. You know, the electric, handheld bug zapper that looks like a child’s tennis racquet. They are fantastic at trapping and destroying any flying indoor bug. The bug literally explodes and vaporizes on contact with the fully-charged wires of the indoor bug zapper. If you haven’t tried using one, you really should. They are most satisfying. These three defences keep our house pretty much free of flies.

The crawling common indoor insects are not so much of a problem really. Door screens on self-closers will keep 99% of them out and the Geckos will help too. Spiders can get in fairly easily, but then, I don’t mind them too much as long as they stay away from me, as they eat other bugs too. They are on our side really. However, for those who can not bear to trap them and throw them outside, the handheld indoor bug zapper works well on spiders too.

Sometimes, Fleas can be a problem, if you have cats or dogs, but then if you wash or dust the animal once a month, you should be able to keep these common indoor bugs under control quite easily. However, there are two final methods that we use. Once a week, before we go out for the day, we spray every room with fly killer and every six-months we spray any rugs or carpets with a bug killer containing permethrin, which will survive washing and vacuuming for that long without losing its ability to kill common indoor bugs on contact. If you stick with these methods, you will be able to keep your home or office quite free of the most common indoor bugs and any less common indoor bug as well.

Have you ever heard of an indoor bug zapper? If you haven’t, or if you want to get an indoor bug zapper, please click one of the links to our web site or blog.

Anger Management Movies

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Because anger management is a such a big problem in society today, there have been many programs developed, books written, Internet websites created and anger management movies filmed. Even though all of this help is in place and available for anyone, not all people with anger issues can benefit from the same type of resource. Some people get help attending an anger management program - it may be effective and cause major changes in their characteristics.

Being able to steal away alone with a book may be helpful to a person with anger issues. Seeing their problems in print and being able to sort through them in their mind might be a great anger management resource. The Internet is a great resource regarding anger management and some may find it helpful to view the different sites and read stories about individuals with anger management issues. However for many people who have difficulties controlling their anger, watching an anger management movie might be what it takes to break them out of their pattern of angry, emotional outbursts.

Watching an anger management film would allow the individual the chance to actually see, with their own eyes and hear with their own ears, just what anger does to a person and those around them. An anger management movie would likely provide illustrations and situations where individuals act on their anger. The movie may apply exactly to an individual’s current circumstance. It may hit home - so to speak. Watching the actors play out their life story and their behaviour may be an eye-opener. It may take watching a husband abuse a child or wife, a mother attacking her kid, a child bullying another child, to realize that anger is a significant problem.

When an angry person is in that frame of mind- ie really angry, he is likely to blame it on whoever is around him. But being an actor in his own picture, he is incapable of watching his own performance. However, if they given the chance to see it on the big screen, he might be surprised and even devastated by his actions. Watching an anger management film would probably be like watching yourself in a similar situation. This may be the method that works best for some individuals.

An anger management movie will not only give illustrations of the actual situations involving anger. The movie will likely provide information regarding anger management techniques. Using these techniques and the characters in the movie, it is likely that there would be scenes of people being introduced to anger management techniques and programmes.

The film would explain the steps to dealing with anger and frustration issues. This type of anger management movie might be the answer to a lot of people’s afflictions. It would seem a good idea if the anger management movie showed the person, in the same situation as the sufferer, change from the first scene in the film to the last scene. Showing how the individual was able to receive help through anger management and turn his life around, could just be the incentive he needed.

There is no doubt that, there are all sorts of anger management film available in the stores. The Internet is also a great source of information regarding anger management and anger management resources like as books and anger management films. If you think you or someone you know would benefit from watching an anger management movie, it would be a wise idea to get your hands on one.
