Home schooling is one the three alternatives available for a child to acquire an education. The other alternatives are the formal public or private schooling systems. The number of people who favour home schooling is increasing day by day.

There are more proponents of home schooling now than ever before. According to a study, there are more than 1.4 million home schooled children in America alone now. There are different schools of thought in favour of home schooling.

The advocates of home schooling claim that it is the better alternative for the following causes.

1. Children studying in schools get an environment where they interrelate with children of their same age group. In this manner they are restricted to their own social circle, so they compare and relate themselves with that particular age group. Such children tend to be slow learners as compared to home-schooled children.

The percentage of home-schooled children who pass the common, standard tests is 30 to 37 percent higher than the other children who go to normal school. The fast learning capability of home-school kids is due to their interaction with people from all age classes.

2. Homeschooled kids tend to acquire their identity from society rather than a limited age group at school. Such kids tend to be more realistic and more involved in real life. In comparison to kids who go to school, the homeschooled do not feel alienated from society. Kids who go to school also have less time to interact with their parents.

Family life is better experienced in this form of education. It provides an opportunity for parents to communicate with their children and talk to them about real life situations more frequently. In this way, information tends to be more related to real life rather than merely the learned one.

3. The environment in this type of education is safe when compared to a standard school system. Children are more exposed to moral and physical misconduct in a ordinary school system. It becomes actually difficult for parents and guardians to take supervision of their kids? activities.

In home schooling, parents and guardians have a better chance to take care of and control the learning environment of their children. Children studying under this system learn in an environment free from moral, physical and emotional abuse, if their parents do not inflict it.

4. It is claimed that home schooling results in a better transmission of beliefs and values from parents to their children. They learn their traditions and morality by watching their parents rather than from books because they spend more time in close contact with their parents. It helps them to construct a more personal relationship with their parents and family.

5. Home schooling offers close and individual attention to the child. The needs of every child are different and each child requires a different type of treatment. In this system of education, conditions may be changed to fit the requirements of every child.

In spite of the fact that there are so many benefits of home schooling and so many researchers have recommended it, it is important for parents to administer this kind of educational system. If handled in the right manner, it will prove to be more advantageous and successful.

Do you have happy memories of your school years? Do you have happy memories of teachers and school friends? If you do then you were lucky, because some children hate each minute of being in school and not because they are no good at it either. Frequently it is the clever kids who are taunted for being swots and teachers’ pets. They are safe in the class, but the travelling to and from school and the school breaks can become nightmares.

However, it is not just bullying from other children that causes fear in school children. There are other causes for fear in school as well. Sometimes, children think that a particular teacher does not like them and sometimes children are only scared of failing or doing badly. Occasionally teachers are afraid of doing badly as well. It can all lead to an atmosphere of fear at school. It makes you wonder how anyone could have enjoyed their school days, does it not?

This atmosphere of fear can get greater in state schools because the teachers are subject to success charts and the kids are more open to bullying. Furthermore, all of the school shootings in the world have taken place in state run schools.

However, the most subtle form of fear in school comes from teachers who are scared of missing the targets set by the state, because that will cost them their jobs. This fear is passed on to their pupils. The regime of fear is exacerbated by over-sized groups. Why?

Because teachers can hold the attention of just so many pupils – as we all can in regular discourse. Therefore, if the class is too big, the teacher will have to switch roles from being a teacher to a controller. When this occurs, education suffers for the sake of restoring order.

For all of these reasons and more, many parents are turning to home schooling. Some of the reasons why parents are deciding to educate their children themselves are: distrust of the state education system; fear of bullying or worse of their children; a desire to teach their children in a more conventional or religious manner.

There are education packages that parent-teachers can buy to give them a course of action on what to teach. There is also a lot of help available on the Internet. The problem facing any parents who wish to educate their own children is providing a rounded education.

People have a natural tendency to specialize in one topic or group of topics like, say, astronomy or the sciences, which is why schools supply many teachers, so that each one can teach his or her favourite subject. However, if you are the only teacher you will have to teach all the subjects yourself.

This is why it is best to have a course or set of guidelines to follow. It is hard to teach maths if you have no aptitude for it, so look at your strengths but also your weaknesses before you take the momentous decision to remove your children from school and educate them themselves

Do you think that passing time in traditional classrooms is not worth it? For many people, that is true. For instance, a test is due and the pupils are told to memorize a lot of dates and names. However, after taking the exam, they will probably forget 90% of those dates and names. That’s what the majority of students do every time they have exams. If you are one of these people, you will find traditional history lessons boring, so home schooling, which focuses more on the history of the world will surely catch your fancy.

Simple memorization by rote is just not enough to realize the importance of historically famous people and fateful events. However, through home schooling in history, you can learn about the different cultures of the past in a different, but interesting way – that is your own way! Through the study of history, you will also realize the situation of the world today.

But, if you consider that home schooling is the best option for your child’s learning, you must also be prepared to take on certain responsibilities. As there will be no teacher physically present, you will have to oversee your child’s educational development by yourself.

Let’s suppose that your child is interested in sports. Through history and home schooling, you can start by simply putting a map on the wall of your child’s room. Mark the location of his favorite sports team and make sure that you track all the team’s activities and schedules. Then, you could go back to history by reading biographies of the various athletes, who had been popular in the particular sport that your child likes. Aside from that, you can also look into the history of that specific sport and discover where it originated, its inventor, and the other things happening in that particular time.

For example, let’s say your child follows baseball, you can teach your child about the history baseball, government hearings on the use of steroids and other favourite pastimes during that period in time. But remember that you can adapt this method to any interest like dancing, flight, cars or any invention. You can also have conversations with your child about current events or read interesting historical documents and other books. Apart from that, you could also watch documentaries together with the rest of the family. There are various resources that you can use while home schooling, like TV, maps, newspapers, books, a globe, an atlas, and encyclopedias. Because of the exciting adventures that you and your child will read about and see on film, your child will find it easier to remember the names and dates of the history lessons. After all, learning is best when it is done in a fun way.

These ways are advisable for when the child is still young, but once your child is older, you should select a home schooling program that is suitable to his/her age group. The programs are available at the elementary, high school, and even college levels. You just have to search the Internet for these different programs. One good thing about these programs is that you can adapt them to suit the requirements of your child. However, you must see to it that all the lessons are followed by your child.

Once you and your child decide to try home schooling, you must be prepared for some changes to take place in your life. The learning environment will now be your home not a school and through the various resources that you can use including the computer and Internet.

What have you been reading lately? At a meeting, you can soon tell who the frequent readers are, since frequent readers are often quick thinkers and good public speakers too. They quickly win the adulation, respect, and fellowship of others. After all, reading expands the mind and many people think of it as one of the most satisfying pleasures known to mankind, being a combination, as it is, of mental agility and physical relaxation well above the level offered by television or the cinema.

Reading is primarily a mental activity, since you read with your mind and use your imagination to depict the storyline of the action thriller you are reading. You use your mind to imagine the pain that the characters in the story are experiencing as the plot unfolds; or you contemplate the various arguments and ideas introduced by the author of that self-help book you are holding.

Reading effectively helps you to develop a wide range of vocabulary by reading various types of books. A skillful reader recognizes a wide range of vocabulary. The reader may not understand exactly what every word means, but he/she will have a good idea of what the sentence is trying to say.

The act of reading makes you more alert and more curious about hitherto unknown words. Some readers even like to employ ‘the dictionary habit’, which means that every time they find a strange word, they attempt to figure out what it means from the context. If they are stumped, they refer to a dictionary.

In the same way, reading develops intellectual curiosity by exposing you to different subjects. You learn to read by reading books of increasing difficulty and variety. Just as in other forms of education, you are learning by actually doing and while you are reading you are automatically learning about the subject matter of the book too – like a free by-product!

Basically, reading teaches you to have an active and open mind. Only understanding the writers point of view is not really good enough, you must have a response to what you have read. Be an active, not a passive, reader. Try to develop the habit of drawing your own conclusions, the habit of active thinking, of agreeing or disagreeing with the author. Always keep your mind open; understand and consider the ideas that you have read. A practical part of active reading is the development of one’s own conclusions.

Now let me mention the concept of speed reading. All of the above applies between three and ten times over, because speed readers can read that much faster than the average reader! Consider that! – Being able to read, comprehend and remember all those books and articles. You would surely become well-read in your subject much more rapidly than others. Just think how that would help you at work, in school or in college …

Allow me to share four basic rules for effective reading and better comprehension:

1) Try to read more and more every month. Remember the saying that practice makes perfect. 2) Develop the habit of reading for main ideas. Look for the subject and predicate. Do not waste time on details or little words. 3) Learn to read with focus and concentration. Think of what you are reading. Do not let your attention wander somewhere else. Good readers read with understanding. 4) Learn to budget your time. Experiment with your reading time. Try purposely to read faster. Give yourself a time limit on a specific piece that you are reading.

Reading is a fantastically stimulating mental activity. It expands your understanding and capability. You really have so much to gain by learning the joy of reading. So, go on and take down a book right today.

Nobody actually knows when speed reading was first used, but it might have been a long time in the past. For centuries, reading was the privilege of a small group of the most well-educated people in the world, the overwhelming preponderance of whom were monks and priests. This small, select group of men protected their privilege and were loathe to teach the general populace to read. Moreover, during those hundreds of years there were relatively few books to read compared with today. Books were also very dear as they all had to be copied out by hand. Possibly the only fact that has not altered is that the Bible was the most widespread book in existence and even now the Bible is the most prevalent book.

The world is quickly becoming a place where individuals are slowly but surely giving up on books and becoming fixed in front of monitors or television screens. In such a world, parents must not ignore the importance of developing a zeal for reading in themselves and their children. Reading is a habit that should be established when the child is fairly young, so what can you do to engender this habit?

Well, there are a number of strategies you can employ, although one of the best to lead by example. Read with your child every day, even if its only for 10-15 minutes. Permit your child to see you reading. By this I mean, don’t only read in bed before you go to sleep, but in place of watching television from time to time and read your children a bed-time story. Encourage them to read too. You could also:

Enroll your child for reading lessons, if you honestly don’t have any time or your child is a bit slow at reading. There are many well-structured after school reading classes that aspire to make books more appealing to children. They help children with enunciation, sayings and phrases. These classes can be pleasurable with cartoon characters and pictures, especially for young children,. They frequently make use of picture books, nursery rhymes, silly songs and short stories to fire up the imagination of younger children.

You will have to learn how to arouse your child’s interest. If your child has a favorite character, pick a series of books that include this character. Endeavor to encourage your children to read proper books not comics. The style in comics frequently leaves a great deal to be desired with its sloppy English and street slang. As an alternative, go for series of books like Harry Potter or Tarzan.

You should build yourself a library of your own books. This may sound a little impressive, but after all, a library is only a collection of books. Start with a good-looking bookshelf that you can easily add to. A talent like reading cannot be learned in only one place, so you cannot afford to leave all the difficult work to the day-school or even the after school programs. You have to collect books that you think your child will like too. Make use of the Internet as a source for learning about the modern reading games that will attract little children to the excellent and ancient art of reading,

When you child is interested in reading for its own sake, you might read up on speed reading. Speed reading is best suited for informative learning and background reading. It’s immensely suited to cramming or studying for examinations. It is ideal for school and university. However, the first job, before you can think about speed reading, is to get your child reading in the first place.

Do you consider that spending time in traditional classrooms is a waste of time? For some people, that is probably true. For example, a test is due and the students are told to memorize a lot of dates and names. However, after taking the exam, they will definitely forget 90% of those dates and names. That’s what most students do every time they have tests. If you are one of these people, you will find traditional history lessons boring, so home schooling, which concentrates more on the history of the world, will surely interest you more.

Simple memorization by rote is just not enough to know the significance of historically famous people and important events. However, through home schooling in history, you can study the different cultures of the past in a different, but interesting way – that is your own way! Through the study of history, you will also realize what is happening in the world today.

But, if you consider that home schooling is the most effective method for your child’s learning, you should also be prepared to take on certain responsibilities. As there will be no teacher physically present, you will have to oversee your child’s educational progress by yourself.

Let’s say your child supports a particular sport. You could combine history and home schooling by just putting a map on the wall of your child’s schoolroom and mark the location of his favourite sports team. Make sure that you track all the team’s games, scores, activities and schedules. Then, you could return to history lessons by reading biographies of the different athletes, who had been famous in the particular sport that your child follows. Apart from that, you could also examine the history of that particular sport and discover where it originated, its inventor, and the other things happening at that particular time in history.

For instance, let’s say your child follows baseball, you can teach your child about the history baseball, government hearings on the use of drugs and other favourite pastimes at that period of time. Just remember that you can apply this method to any interest like dancing, flight, cars or any invention. You can also have conversations with your child about current affairs or read interesting historical documents and other books. Apart from that, you can also watch documentaries together with the rest of the family. There are various resources that you can use in home schooling, such as TV, maps, newspapers, books, a globe, an atlas, and encyclopedias. Because of the exciting adventures that you and your child will read about and see on film, he/she will find it easier to remember the names and dates of the history lessons. After all, education is best when it is done in an interesting way.

These ways are recommended for when the child is still young, however once your child is older, you must choose a home schooling program that is suitable to his/her age group. The programs are available at the elementary, high school, and even college levels. You just have to search the Internet for these various programs. One good thing about these programs is that you can tailor them to suit the interests of your child. However, you have to make sure that all the lessons are studied by your child.

Once you and your child have decided to try home schooling, you must be prepared to make some changes to your life. The learning environment will now be in your home not at a school and through the various resources that you think best, such as a computer and the Internet.

by Colin Jones

According to the National Center For Education Statistics, roughly 1.1 million children underwent home schooling in 2005 alone. That’s a lot of children. Once upon a time, homeschooling used to be a radical statement – something like a declaration of independence.

It was the (right-wing|conservative Christians who pushed for homeschooling in the ’80s and legalized it in every State. But the typical homeschooler of today is not religiously motivated.

More recent surveys indicate that parents are really fed up with the public school system where much of the learning is superficial and compulsory. They are also concerned about the negative environment in school, which ranges from drugs and abuse to negative peer pressure.

Because of this, we have a surprising mix of people who form the homeschooling world of today. They cut across all religious creeds and all regional borders. Their chief aim is providing meaningful and productive learning through a means that strengthens the bond between all the members of the family.

These families all have one main thing in common – a long standing commitment to the sanctity of childhood. The children of these families are accorded a primary position. Many believe, and, I think, rightly so, that home schooling allows parents to bring up their kids in a more natural and caring environment.

Public schools can make a child anxious, subservient and downright mean. Children who get their education at home are protected from these damaging, negative influences until they attain an age where they can deal with them.

Home-schooling draws the whole family into the almost religious job of teaching. Everyone has a role to play. Both the parents together form a bond with the children. Any experience can be turned into an learning experience. Both the parents are aware of exactly what is going into their child’s education.

Parents also have a greater control over the kind of religious and moral values that the child is taught. Even watching a film together can become an educational experience. Trips to the libraries, zoos, museums and other places become educational as well as recreational.

A home-schooling family is primarily dependent on the income of one earning member. That means that often outgoings have to be curtailed and proper planning of expenditure is necessary. This helps to bring the family members together and everybody gets involved in the process of not spending money.

Just having a parent at home to supervise, to nurture and to care for the children brings with it a lot of love and caring. Even the husband chips in and there just is no room for boredom.

Yes OK, problems still do sometimes crop up, and there will be many misgivings in your mind, but when you know that your kids can always rely on you, and your kids know it too, then homeschooling becomes a very rewarding experience.
