Have you decided that your bedroom could do with a make-over? We pass more time in our bedroom than any other room in the world, even if you work long hours in an office for your boss. When you realize this fact, it ought to become clear that you ought to have as pleasant and as comfortable a bedroom as you possibly can within the limits of your budget, naturally. There is always that wretched budget isn’t there? The best thing to do is treat the budget as only another challenge.

The first thing to do is decide what sort of bedroom you want. Do you want a sexy, French boudoir style or are you short of room so you’ll have to have a mini-office in the corner? The style people choose for their bedroom usually depends on whether they are single or married and then on whether they have children or not.

Most parents are too embarrassed to have a boudoir for a bedroom. Boudoirs tend to be for single women and practical bedrooms with a computer in the corner are for married couples with children and single men.

These are not hard and fast rules, but you might be surprised if you do not agree with me. I was a decorator for our family construction firm for fifteen years and I have been in hundreds of bedrooms of all sorts of people.

Once you have settled on the style you would like, look in some home improvement magazines, watch some home remodelling programes on TV and look for suggestions and products on the Net in order to refine your ideas. The you can make up your mind exactly what you want.

Then look in your bedroom and make your mind up on what you can keep. Move the remainder of the stuff to other bedrooms, sell it or give it away. Once you have chosen your colours and fabrics, you can either start redecorating yourself or call someone like I was in to do it for you.

Whilst you are deciding on your bedroom furniture, make certain that you provide a lot of space for you to hang your clothes up and put your stuff away. There is nothing that makes a bedroom look more scruffy than clothes, laundered and unlaundered lying everywhere. If you have a tendency to just throw your used clothes off on to a chair, put a big laundry basket or box somewhere convenient.

It is the same with shoes, bags, briefcases, lunch boxes, umbrellas and all the rest of the paraphernalia: have somewhere to put it, if at all possible behind a door. If you have to have a computer in your bedroom, so be it, but you could get a beautiful, carved hardwood screen to place in front to it.

If you do not require a new mattress, you could make your present one more sumptuous with a mattress topper or even a memory foam mattress topper. Cover your bed with a beautiful eiderdown or put your duvet in a beautiful duvet cover and position half a dozen stylish throw cushions on the bed. Do not forget to colour co-ordinate the curtains too.

When I was a fairly young boy of about twelve years of age, my mother wanted me to learn tennis, so she got me a tennis racquet for Christmas so that I might take up the hobby. There had been many options in terms of choosing a tennis racquet. My mother told me later and it had been quiteconfusing.

My mother had gone to a sports shop and chosen one racquet out of the three that I guess were in her price bracket at that time. But today, choosing a racquet can be quite a difficult job. Brands, materials, technologies – they all add to the difficulty of making a choice.

The various options one has today in a sports store can sometimes be disconcerting. So what elements should be taken into account when choosing a tennis racket?

To start with, look at the grip size. Children would most likely find that up to size four would suit them best while adults may go up to 4 and 5/8″ in order to get a better grip of the tennis racquet.

The head size is also quite important when selecting your racquet. Probably women and children would prefer the head size to be smaller and offer more precision and would not get on with the larger head size tennis racquet which requires more strength although it offers more precision when hitting the ball.

The middle size is somewhere between 85 and 95 square inches and this is the one that suits most players, whether amateurs or professionals. Novices are recommended to buy a larger-head tennis racket as they would not focus so much on precision but rather on the power that the racquet will supply to their hit.

Another factor to take into account is the flex quality of the tennis racquet. If the racquet is stiff you will almost certainly have more power when hitting the ball because the energy is not lost due to bending.

The more flexible racquet would not maintain the amount of energy the ball first had before you hit it, but it would definitely offer greater control over the travel of the ball.

Professional and good amateur players prefer flexible racquets because they do not need to preserve the ball’s energy as they can hit the ball as hard as they require anyway. They would always be more interested in controlling the ball.

Of course, another factor related to this would be the material that the racquet is made from and the technology that has been used to manufacture it. These two elements should inform the buyer how flexible or stiff the tennis racquet really is.

If you are a novice tennis player or want to know more about the general psychology of tennis, please go to our website called Tennis Tips for Beginners

Someone who has a toy hobby is normally an adult. After all, all children collect toys – the more the merrier for them, but a person who has a toy hobby normally collects one type of toy – like, say, train sets or a precise maker of train set. These adults retain their childhood fascination with fantasy. They are not childish, but are childlike when they begin talking on the topic of or playing with their favourite toys.

Some toy hobbyists like to share their hobby with children, frequently grandparents come into this group, and some toy hobbyists do not, often single men who are scared that children might damage their frequently valuable collection.

These collections of toys can get very valuable, because toy hobbyists tend to collect the toys from their childhood, so a grandparent is usually collecting toys from fifty or sixty years ago.

A favourite toy hobby for women is collecting antique dolls or dolls from other countries. Occasionally this interest in dolls will spill over into an interest for dolls’ prams or dolls’ clothes and they might start to make dolls’ clothes and even their own garments. Some women and some men too get into making dolls and even dolls’ houses.

Rag dolls are a distinct favourite both for the collector and the crafter because they are easy to manufacture and easy to repair. Teddy bears could also be put in the category of dolls. Numerous homes have a small collection of teddy bears if there have been children brought up there and it is not unusual to see hundreds of teddy bears on shelves scattered around a house.

Lots of older men collect train sets or model cars. Hornby, Marxs, Marklin and Lionel come to mind for train sets and Matchbox and Dinky for small but detailed, die cast model cars. Tonka is famous for larger, maybe less detailed, model trucks, but people liked to play with their bulldozers, trucks and earth-movers as children.

More contemporary toys that have become collectible include Beanie Babies. Beanie Babies are childlike representations of babies. So there are baby kangaroos, baby elephants, in fact babies of each type of animal you can think of and each one has its own separate personality.

They are not expensive and lovable and there are hundreds of them – just the blend that some collectors desire. Teddy bear collectors frequently have a few Beanie Babies as well.

Other popular toy hobbies are flying radio-controlled, powered model aircraft and racing motor-powered radio-controlled cars and trucks. There are also hobbyists that collect or and make radio-controlled boats. Some collectors of radio-controlled aircraft, boats and vehicles might not like being referred to as toy hobbyists, but it is what they are after all.

Wooden toys have always been well-liked as well. A hundred years ago and further, all toys would have been made of wood, particularly those of the working class and there are still a lot of parents and grandparents who like to give or make wooden toys themselves. A toy hobby is a great pastime for those who remember their childhood fondly and never really got out of the habit of playing.

Golfing is a hands-on game. You will not learn how to play well by studying a video or playing a Nintendo game. You can watch all the pro golf games on TV you like, but can you remember how Tiger Woods did it when the ball is in front of you and the club is in your hands?

People make millions out of golf videos, golf tutorials and golf games, but few people have ever learned anything from them. You will learn much more by spending an hour with the club golfing pro.

If you truly would like a video to watch at home, why not create your own whilst you are spending an hour with the golfing pro? Take a kid with you to film your lesson on a camcorder.

The first suggestion for novices is to keep your eyes on the ball. This might sound obvious, but if you watch novices taking a shot, you will often see that they look away too early. This can result in a sliced stroke or even a miss. If you keep your eyes on the ball, you will not lose it either.

While putting, stand squarely above the ball. The ball should lay midway between your feet and your head ought to be directly above the ball. This also allows you to get a decent line of vision to the hole. The stroke should be smooth, with a graceful follow through.

Keeping the ball on the fairway is a problem for most new golfers. It appears all to easy to slice the ball into the rough. This has to do with your stance. A sliced ball is one that has been hit on its side, like putting side on a snooker ball to make it spin in that direction.

If you put side on a golf ball, it will spin in that direction and veer off in that direction as well. The answer to this problem, is to always hit the ball squarely will the centre of the blade of the club, unless you want it to curve in mid flight. That is for advanced players though. Novices should concentrate on learning how to hit the ball in a straight line.

Hooking the ball is a different difficulty altogether although the affect is comparable – that is that the ball goes off to the side. Hooking the ball has to do with swing and stance. It is usually the result of not driving the ball straight ahead of you, but slinging it to the opposite side of your dominant arm. That is, right-handed golfers will hook the ball to the left.

To right this, practice hitting the ball only a couple of yards into an upright bucket or a dog’s basket. Each day you ought to move the basket back a couple of feet until you can confidently chip almost each ball into the basket. Then go for power and endeavour to hit the ball from the tee onto the green.

If you have just moved into a new, old house, one of the first things that you will probably want to do is refurbish or remodel the kitchen, especially if you like cooking or spending a lot of time in the kitchen. If you use a kitchen a great deal, you will probably already have a good idea of what you would like the kitchen to look like in the end.

One of the first decisions to make is whether you are going to do it yourself or oversee it yourself. There is a lot of work in a kitchen refurb and I have seen amateurs spend years, literally years, doing what a professional could have done in weeks. This always leads to family tensions. Once that I know of, it even led to divorce. It seems that everybody wants to boast that they are having refurbishments done, but no one actually wants to go through the hassle of having it actually done.

If you are not completely sure what you want your kitchen to look like, it is a good suggestion to visit show kitchens in home improvement stores and even pick up brochures there to look at at home. You could also buy a few magazines and surf the Internet for suggestions.

Once you see a few examples that you like, be sure to cut out the pages and print off the image files after downloading them. This way you can build up a dossier of the things that you would like to incorporate into your new kitchen..

Once you are happy that you have all the bits and pieces you like, you have to collate them. This does not have to be to scale or exact, but just as good as you can do with what you have. Take a large sheet of paper, say A3, and draw in your kitchen’s windows and doors.

Then cut out the pictures of the items you want from the magazines and brochures and stick them in place. If you think that this is not realistic, draw them in and label them clearly so that you can refer back to your picture file.

You need not stop at one design, you can play about with it. If you cut the images out, but do not glue them down, you can move them around until you are contented. You may also want to get the opinions of other members of the family and have a brain storming session

When you have finished, decide how you are going to illuminate the kitchen. Do you want a pendant light over the table? Do you want spots pointing at the cooker and the sink? Do you want hidden down-lighting to shine on the work surface? How are you going to see what you are doing? It is a very important question. Wall lights are good for ambient lighting.

In conclusion, you have to choose a colour scheme and you are almost ready to begin, unless you are using a contractor and then you will have to select one first, but that will make up the contents of another article.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article writes on several subjects, but is at present involved with researching wrought iron floor lamps.

This list includes both British born artists and those who were born elsewhere but did most of their most important creations in the U.K. The assortment is listed in chronological order by date of birth.

Max Beerbohm ( 1872 – 1956 )

Sir Henry Maximilian “Max” Beerbohm was born in London, son of a well-to-do Lithuanian-born grain merchant. His family gave him he nick-name of Max and that is what he signed himself in his work and was known as for the rest of his life.

Beerbohm was educated at Charterhouse School and Merton College, Oxford but finished without taking a degree as he was already well recognized as a caricaturist and humourist.

He had an incapacity to draw hands and feet but was very good at heads and his dandified figures with inflated heads quickly became his trade-mark. The Times newspaper in 1913 described him as ?the greatest of English comic artists and he was variously hailed as ?the English Goya? and “the greatest portrayer of personalities in the history of art?

Henry Bateman (1887 – 1970)

Bateman was born in New South Wales, Australia of English parents who returned to England soon after he was born. He studied art at Westminster School of Art and the Goldsmith Institute.

His style matured early in life and by the age of 17 it was already established. He achieved a contract with Tatler magazine but is best well-known for his ?The Man Who??.? series of cartoons. These showed hapless people who had committed mostly upper class social faux pas. ?The Man Who lit his Cigar before the Loyal Toast? is a prime instance.

Sir David Low (1891 – 1963)

Sir David Alexander Cecil Low was born in New Zealand and taught at Dunedin and Christchurch. He began his professional life in New Zealand and in fact his first effort was published while he was only 11 years of age.

He later moved to Australia and next to England and by 1927 was working for The Evening Standard. He is best remembered for his caricatures depicting Hitler and Mussolini both before and during World War II. In fact, generations of New Zealand school children learned about the beginning of the Second World War using textbooks illustrated by Low.

He was especially hated by Hitler and after the war it was uncovered that his name was in the ?Black Book? which listed those who the Nazis wished to arrest after they had conquered Britain.

Low was knighted in 1962, a year before his death. His obituary spoke of him as “the dominant cartoonist of the western world”

Ronald Searle (b. 1920)

Ronald William Fordham Searle was born in Cambridge and began drawing at the prodigiously early age of five and was working professionally by the age of 15. The War interrupted his art studies and he enlisted in the Royal Engineers .

He was serving in Singapore when he was captured by the Japanese. He was a prisoner of war for the remainder of the war eventually working on the notorious Siam-Burma ?Death Railway?. He created, in secret, many drawings depicting conditions in the camps which survived discovery by being concealed under the mattresses of dying prisoners.

He returned to England at the end of the war and produced a prodigious volume of work in the 1950?s and 60?s. However he is best known as the creator of ?St Trinians School?.

Gerald Scarfe (b. 1936)

Gerald Anthony Scarfe was born in London and as a child was severely asthmatic. During his early bed-ridden years he busied himself by drawing. He began his working life in advertising but by the early 60?s his caricatures were appearing in ?Private Eye? and this led to a job with the ?Daily Mail?.

But it was his work with the British rock group Pink Floyd for which he is most known particularly the illustration for the cover of their 1979 album ?The Wall?.

Searle also provided the caricatures for the opening and closing sequences of the well-liked BBC comedy ?Yes Minister? and in 1998 he drew caricatures of Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecombe, Joyce Grenfell, Les Dawson and Peter Cook which were shown on a set of five British postage stamps celebrating British comedians.

If you would like to begin flying or even making radio controlled choppers, the best way to start is at the beginning and the beginning is with small electric, 7″-8″ long, battery-powered models. These models are very cheap compared to a year ago, when they cost $100-$120 each. Now you can purchase one for $20.

There is practically no assembly work with these small RC helicopters, although you might have to secure the rotors and insert the battery and a child could do that. However, you are not buying this model in order to learn assembly, you are buying it in order to learn flight management.

These small remote control helicopters normally have three channel-control, which gives you power more than flight in three vectors: up – down; left – right and forwards – backwards.

This sounds very easy, but you will crash your RC helicopter, because you do not know what you are doing and you are not into any routines. You have probably not worked out how to judge distance and height either.

First, you will crash into things and make rough landings. Second, you will misjudge distances, height and flight time.

These latter are important because, your transmitter and receiver have a working distance of about 30 feet and if you model goes outside that range, you lose control over it – anything can happen!

Furthermore, the battery will power the chopper for around 5-7 minutes. If the chopper is 25 feet off the ground when the battery fails, you will have a significant crash on your hands.

Luckily, these little models are very sturdy with a metal frame, so you will almost certainly only lose a couple of rotors, which are not costly or difficult to replace. If you trash the whole thing, you have just lost $20, but what if your model cost $500 and you were only starting out? That would be a costly manner to learn flying RC helicopters, would it not?

These small model helicopters will put up with a lot of rough treatment, but you will require spares and these parts can be purchased. Parts are readily available and it is worth buying spare main and rear rotors as you purchase your model. This is doing you good.

If you make a decision to move up a level after a while, you will realize how practical your practice with a small RC helicopter has been, even though you may just learn so much from these small helicopters. Larger models, say a six or eight foot model will have far more controls and require much more maintenance, so begin small and learn.

One thing that you will be able to do with your small model will be to use it for photographic purposes. Birds might entirely ignore them, so if you strap a small, lightweight contemporary video camera to it, you will be able to get special footage of local birds. You may even get able to sell aerial photographs of your neighbours’ gardens, with their permission, naturally.

Car detailing, or car valeting, as it is known as in Britain, means the thorough cleansing and polishing of a vehicle. One of the dirtiest parts of any car is the wheels and the wheel arches. Dust and mud are the main culprits here. Each single car suffers from road dust and brake pad dust and these are normally held in place by a thick layer of mud, especially if it has rained.

Brake dust comes chiefly from the wearing away of the brake pads on their disk brakes. It is very abrasive and has to be cleaned away on a regular basis. Similarly, road dust which is mostly stone dust, is also abrasive and it should be removed as soon as possible. After a while or as soon as it rains, clay and mud will be kicked up on top of these dusts and stick them all firmly in position.

This can have the result of brakes becoming hotter than they should do, which has the effect of raising the opportunity of brake failure due to excess heat. So you ought to remove this coating regularly not just because it is unsightly, but because it can be a safety risk. Therefore, detailing your car wheels is one of the most important jobs in valeting your car.

There are, naturally, lots of decent cleaning fluids for this job. If your wheel rims are painted, you may want to test any cleaning fluid you are thinking of using by rubbing some of it on a very small part of paint so see if it bleaches it or takes the paint off altogether. This is not likely, but it is worth checking, if you have unusual wheel rims.

This test ought to be carried out for cleaning fluid and for polish. You should use cleaning fluid and polish that is compatible with the metal that your wheels are manufactured from. So if you do not know, you will need to find out.

Are they cast iron, steel, aluminium alloy or magnesium alloy? You do not want to rub on fluids that will attack the metal, because that will cost you a great deal of money in the long run. You can find out easily in the car’s manual or in a garage.

If you are utilizing the same valeting implements on the body of the vehicle as on the wheels, you should clean the body first, because the dust and particles on the wheels will be more abrasive and more plentiful on the wheels and you do not want to transmit it to your paintwork.

Likewise, clean all the mud and dust out from the wheel arch before you start on the wheel itself. Once the wheel arches are clean, you can take off the hub caps and clean inside. put any nuts you remove in a jam jar so that you cannot lose any of them.

Keep in mind to put everything back on in the order that you took it off – first off, first on – and if you cannot keep in mind how tight to make everything write it down as you take it off. While you are down there, you could check the brake lines and bleed them if required. Strive to clean your car at least once a month, but each fortnight is better and once a week is great.

Millions of people love to swim in their gardens about the world. Swimming and playing in the water is immense fun, even if you have to go to a pond, pool, a river or the sea to do it. in order to make full use of a garden pool, you really need to live in a place where the weather is warm. The owner also needs to have some money as pool maintenance fees are high.

Therefore, when people have gone to the trouble of having a garden pool installed, they also like to have the pool used as frequently or as much as possible. You can encourage your friends and family to use the pool more often by making it more fun and more comfortable to do so. Pool accessories or swimming accessories are a means of achieving this.

People like to be in the water, so you could make it straightforward for them by using poolside furniture that will float while supporting an adult. There are various objects like floating chairs, floating tables and plastic inflatable lidos that will keep you and your guests in contact with the water. Decent floating furniture will also support people out of the water, cheap stuff will not.

If you like the concept of floating in your pool whilst sitting on a chair reading a book, this sort of furniture is for you. Lots of these seats have an in-built glass holder and float so that your waist is at the water line, although this really depends on the chair and the person sitting in it.

Then there are floating sun loungers which do more or less the same job as a floating chair, except they tend to keep your whole body out of the water so that you can get an even sun tan. Inflatable lidos or rafts are comparable objects, although the inflatable lido or camp bed is a very cheap device compared with the more solid floating seats and loungers.

Other objects that you could use to increase the enjoyment of your garden pool are aquatic games. You could string up a water polo net or a water volley ball net in order to get people moving. Beach balls are another good idea for encouraging play in the pool. If you are on your own, you could only float about in an inflated truck tyre. They are very comfortable and very cheap.

If you are dead set on relaxation at your pool, you could build a poolside bar. The bar stools could be in the water, if your pool is large enough, otherwise you could incorporate the pool bar into a breakfast bar where you can prepare and eat light meals. Weighty meals are not good for swimmers anyway.

Pool accessories or swimming accessories will heighten your enjoyment of your pool and make your friends and family wait for you next invitation to come around for a swim impatiently. Most of these items do not have to be expensive either.

Hawaii is a beautiful place, we have all seen the films and the vacation photos. The above ground scenery is stunning, but what not so many individuals know is that the sub-aqua scenery is equally as beautiful. The good thing is that you do not have to know precisely where to go to enjoy diving because the diving is good everywhere on the islands.

Not just is the sub-aqua scenery beautiful, but the water is warm too – all year through. You will find millions of fish, aquatic flora, coral and ship wrecks, everything that divers like to look at. There will never be a diver that regrets having gone on a diving holiday in Hawaii.

Would be divers can best study the hobby in Oahu. There are plenty of diving schools and instructors there that have the right to award a diving certificate after a day or two’s tuition. This is very fast, but the courses are thorough, so you can safely go shallow diving after earning your certificate. When shallow water diving, you will see plenty of fish, plants and coral.

There are also several wrecks at Oahu, so you will be able to investigate these too, if you have a little more experience. There are a number of huge ships down there and millions of fish.

One of the best locations to go scuba diving is Ka’awaloa Cove, which is in western Hawaii. The cove is only accessible by boat, but that is not difficult because there are several small boat companies that offer a ferry service. Kona is another great diving spot on the big island.

Both of these regions cater for both the greenhorn and the expert. Kona is thick with plankton, which may not sound interesting in itself, until you understand that the plankton attracts giant manta rays. The rays are especially spectacular when seen on dives at night.

Red Hill and Kona also offer excellent opportunities for diving because there are underwater lava flows. The lava flows are best seen by daylight because that is when the sun shines off them giving them their name of Red Hills. They are just accessible by boat, but then that is not a problem either.

The smaller island of Maui also has fantastic diving locations. Check out Molokini and its underwater volcanic crater. The crater is home for reef sharks, majestic sea turtles, many tropical marine fish and the spectacular giant manta rays again. This is one of the best dive sites on Hawaii and really has to be on your short list of must do dives.

The best thing about diving in Hawaii is that there is so much to see and do wherever you are situated. OK, the well-liked attractions are just that, very popular, but many people like being with plenty of other individuals – after all there is safety in numbers, but Hawaii also has quiet spots which you can discover if you look and the diving will be great there as well because the fish are the same and the water is as warm.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a lot of topics, but is currently occupied with Body Glove cases products.
