People who are not vegetarians almost certainly ask themselves how a vegetarian cook can keep vegetarian meals stimulating with just vegetables at his disposal. This same consideration may be preventing or at least deterring some meat-eaters from giving up meat and attempting to follow vegetarianism. The fact is, that vegetarian meals are not only ‘meat and two veg’ without the meat, although forty years ago there were many vegetarians who started like that.

However, a routine of ‘meat and two veg’ without the meat is not sustainable. A person who eats meals such as these will soon fall sick, particularly if there is no fish, dairy or eggs in the diets either. Many vegetarians opt to eat a small amount to dairy, fish or eggs to help supply much needed protein, which can be difficult to replace in a met-free diet.

Vegetarians have to plan their meals far more than meat-eaters in order to get everything that a body requires to grow, repair itself and defend itself from disease. It will of course take some time for the newcomer to vegetarianism to learn new recipes and how to cook them so in the beginning, many vegetarians do indeed cook meals which are of the ‘meat and two veg’ without the meat sort.

This is all OK if you know what to exchange for the meat. There are a number of things in the stores, but one of the most useful is soya in all its various kinds. Tempeh is a soya bean meat substitute and so is tofu. Both these can be used to replace meat for a supply of protein.

The good thing about these substances is that they can be made to taste of anything you like – they take on flavours fairly readily. They can also be treated to resemble the texture of meat.

Seitan (wheat gluten) is a similarly adaptable and helpful product, but you have to be sure that you are not allergic to gluten first, because this allergy appears to be spreading. Soya bean products and seitan can be easily bought at health food shops and Oriental shops.

As you get more capable at cooking vegetarian meals, you will probably rely less heavily on these things. Beans and nuts are also useful substitutes, but you will probably have to learn how to use them first. Take a look at chickpeas, lentils yet kidney beans.

Soya by-products like soya milk and soya yoghurt and even soya margarine can be used to take the place of regular dairy products. You can also create a type of healthy milk from rice water or / and blended nuts. Besides making milk and casseroles from nuts, some nuts are fantastic in salads. Have a go with walnuts, cashews and almonds and try seeds too like sesame and poppy. Sunflower seeds and others are great for snacks.

Bread and sandwiches are tasty vegetarian fast foods. Experiment with different sorts of flour. Get yourself a bread-making machine and make your own bread. Preparation time is minutes but you can set the timer to cook the bread for whenever you like. Seven in the morning beats any alarm clock.

The first thing that will occur before any surgery is an examination of the eye in question. An examination is crucial, because not everybody is a perfect candidate for Lasik surgery. This is because not all eyes are the same shape and not everyone is experiencing bad eyesight for the same reason. So, during the examination, the Lasik surgeon will determine the cause of your deteriorating eyesight and map an exact picture of your eye.

The assessment of your eye will also divulge the thickness of the cornea and the ability of your eye to create tears. In order to do this, the surgeon will drip a liquid into your eye in order to dilate it. This makes it easier to see any irregularities including the refractive error, which is a term used to describe why your eyesight is not perfect.

The Lasik surgeon will then discuss the results of the examination with the patient. This is to discover any previous surgery or damage the eye has undergone. There will also be questions about the patient’s other illnesses, the patient’s family history of eye issues and about any medication that the patient is currently taking. Impending pregnancy is a reason for waiting and the patient will be asked what his or her expectations of the surgery are.

The surgery usually produces excellent results with massive improvements in eyesight, but a surgeon would prefer that you do not expect quite as much. They prefer you to be surprised at how excellent the results are than disappointed. Most individuals are very happy with the results, it should be said.

Before going for the assessment, it is a good idea not to get your hopes up. Some people are found unsuitable for Lasik eye surgery. Some might be recommended other surgery techniques like complete lens replacement. With lens replacement, the old, human lens is removed from within the eye and a plastic one is put in.

This lens replacement surgery is invasive, but does not hurt and just takes about 40 minutes. Lasik surgery takes less time and is also painless. If the surgeon rejects Lasik surgery, ask about alternative techniques including the replacement of your lens.

There are also different techniques of Lasik, so if you are refused one type, ask if there are other types of laser surgery on hand.

Let’s say that you are accepted for laser surgery, your surgeon will give you a couple of instructions which you should follow as if your eyesight depended upon it. These directions can vary from surgeon to surgeon, from patient to patient and from technique to technique, but might be comparable to those below.

Frequently, they will recommend that you do not wear contact lenses for a while (days or weeks) before the operation. This is because contact lenses can distort the shape of the eye or cornea. It also depends on which sort of contact lenses you use – hard or soft, so make sure your surgeon knows and make sure that you know what you use so that you can give accurate information.

General advice is to be cautious with eye make-up for 48 hours before the operation and get someone to pick you up from the surgery.

Lifestyle changes are the most difficult ones to make and one of the toughest lifestyle changes that anyone can attempt voluntarily is to become a vegetarian. Often people find it easier to become part of a support group while attempting lifestyle alterations; think of Alcoholics Anonymous, Weight Watchers or giving up smoking. Joining a support group can help the novice vegetarian too.

The advantages of being a member of such a support group are manifold, but some of them are encouragement, advice and friendship. You may not require the friendship, yet you might like to socialize with other vegetarians so that you can see how they cope with eating out and basically just fitting into a society designed by and for meat-eaters.

However, whether you propose giving up your old friends or not, you may find yourself gravitating away from them after a while quite naturally. Remember the old expression: ‘Birds of a feather flock together’? This is fairly standard.

You will have concerns substituting something else for meat; you will be worried that your diet is lacking in some nutrient; you will start asking yourself which restaurants serve truly vegetarian food and lots more.

Your newly found support group friends will be a immense source of encouragement and advice in this sphere. You may not like the notion of a ‘vegetarian support group’, yet you could just as easily join a vegetarian dining club or vegetarian cookery class, the effect will work out the same – you will learn and you will make new acquaintances.

If you have difficulty locating such a group by the normal methods of your local Yellow Pages and an Internet search, try going to the local community centre, where there may be yoga classes – a few of the attendees will be vegetarians that you can ask. Or go to you local health food shop and ask there Likewise you could ask at a martial arts club or a Hindu Indian restaurant. If all else fails, you could begin your own club.

If you set up your own club, find a sympathetic bar or restaurant that will prepare your meal suggestions for that night at a reasonable price. After a time, I am sure you could build up a lovely little club of twenty people and the landlord may let you have your own room to dine in once a month like the Masons.

If you think that this is too much in the early days, you could simply set up a blog. A blog is an interactive website, where you and others can post relevant knowledge. If you keep the name of the blog relevant to your town and vegetarianism, you should find that other people looking as you once did will find you, whereas you found no one. Once you have built up a circle of local, on line vegetarian sympathizers, you could suggest meeting once a month in the flesh and take the dining idea from there. An advert in the local paper would help too.

Not very long ago, it was not at all out of the ordinary to see blind people walking the streets tap-tapping away with their white sticks, being guided by a dog, normally a Labrador, but I have not seen anyone like that in Britain for years, as far as I remember.

That has to become a good thing; it has to mean that we are starting to cure or at least improve most types of blindness.

My aunty had cataracts for years when I was a child in the Sixties – it was just one of those facts of life. Some people got them when they were old and others did not.

My brother’s mother-in-law had cataracts in the late Nineties and she was put on a two year waiting list to have them taken away, but at least she had hope and they were going to be got rid of free of charge.

I do not know of anyone else that has eye problems except myself. I could not get my specs clean one day and then a friend said he saw a white spot in one of my eyes. He took me to the hospital and the optician stated that I had ‘premature senile cataracts’.

Well, I live in Thailand now and he did not say those exact words. He told me that the cataracts were because I was prematurely senile.

I asked him if that was what he really meant; he looked it up in a book and we both had a hearty laugh about it, although he never really corrected himself.

My condition turned out to be a little bit more problematic than only cataracts, but when I went from the local hospital to a major hospital in Pattaya, the doctor saw me within 30 minutes and asked me if I wanted the cataracts taken away.

I said that I did and she was willing to do the operation there and then. I had it postponed for 24 hours, but she would have sorted my eye out that day in a 30 minute operation, which does not need anaesthetic. I think that that was wonderful.

We have come a long way from routinely seeing blind people on the street and putting up with cataracts through a two-year waiting list to immediate removal of cataracts by laser surgery in 40-50 years.

At least we have in the West and in the East too, if you have the money. There are still millions of people in Asia and particularly in Africa suffering blindness and partial blindness for the sake of an simple 30 minute operation.

Two weeks after my surgical treatment, my other eye started to cloud over. It was as if it had been holding on with its last scrap of strength until I got his mate sorted out.

I had that one done last year and when I was permitted to take off my patch and look about me with two decent eyes again for the first time in a decade, I could not believe that I had forgotten how bright the world really is and that I had not noticed how dingy my world had gotten.

If you are worried about an eye operation, do not be. What you will experience once you can see properly again will make all the worry seem ridiculous and if you get the opportunity to give someone their vision back, please do it.

Most people who are on diets count the amount of calories that are present in their food.

Most people who are on diets count the amount of calories that are present in their food. The low carb diet is very different from these diets because instead of counting calories you must count your carbohydrate intake. There are now many devices by which you can take a carbohydrate count.

In all of these diets the main thing to remember is that there is a difference between raw and cooked food. With raw foods, you only measure the full weight of the food and you see what their actual carbohydrate count is. The cooked food can have various seasoning and other ingredients added. This can change the carbohydrate count of these foods quite drastically.

In order that you don’t get your foods mixed up you may want to see about getting one of those carb counters that are being promoted on the many low carb diet websites on the Internet. Armed with something like this you can very easily look up the carbohydrate count of whatever kinds of food that you want to eat.

There are even carb counters that can find and work out the hidden carbs in your favourite foods and whatever the carb content of these foods is, will be displayed. You will then be able to check whether they fit into the low carb diet you are currently on. You could also see about getting a list of foods where the carbohydrate count for those foods is clearly stated.

In this way, when you work out your meals, you will only have to check your list to discover which low carb foods are acceptable. Sometimes, the Internet low carb recipe websites will have the information about the carbohydrate count that is in their recipe’s ingredients. Of course, if this information is not available you will need to resort to counting carbohydrates yourself to get this vital information.

You should not fret too much about finding what the carbohydrate count is of everything in the recipe. Sometimes, you can be a little too dogmatic and end up leaving important foods out of your meals because your carbohydrate count for that meal or the day has been exceeded.

Basically, with a carbohydrate count you can decide whether or not to use certain ingredients in your meals. However, there is a good aspect to this carbohydrate counting and there is a bad side. Maybe, the main thing that you have to do is to figure out what foods you think to be part of a healthy diet and use the carbohydrate count only to find the nutritional value of your meal.

Do you need to lose those excess kilos real fast? Well, take a free look at Carbohydrate Counters, by visiting our website called The Atkins Diet Plan

Although pregnancy is a totally natural and everyday procedure for women, there is no doubt that it imposes both mental and physical stresses and strains on the person involved.

Expectant mothers worry about whether the baby is well and whether they are doing all they could to give their baby every opportunity to do well.

This is normal for normal, healthy women, so how much more worrying and how much more difficult must pregnancy be for diabetic women? Firstly, the diabetic mother-to-be has to make sure that she is ‘normal’ and then worry like any ‘normal’ mother. This can add up to lots of extra pressure.

Nutrition, so diet, and exercise are the real keys to success here. I do not mean dieting to lose weight either. During pregnancy is not the ideal time to attempt to lose weight!

Rather, the pregnant diabetic has to eat sensibly and follow all the doctor’s advice on what to eat in order to encourage the correct development of the baby.

Most people talk of two types of diabetes: Type I or juvenile diabetes and Type II or on-set diabetes in those who get it later in life. However, there is a third, which just pregnant women can develop.

It most frequently manifests itself in the last third of the pregnancy and is not at all uncommon. In fact, The USA is the only major country that calls it a disease.

It is known as gestational diabetes and some medical professionals think that it is a fairly normal part of pregnancy, although it can become exaggerated in some women. Around 3%-10% of pregnant women get gestational diabetes, depending on the population being monitored.

It can be easily treated in most cases, but must be treated, because it can affect the baby and may have longer term complications for the woman. Normally, the indications of diabetes disappear after giving birth. It may however lead to type II diabetes if not taken care of.

Pregnancy for women who were diabetic before they became pregnant can be more of a problem and ought to be monitored more closely because of the continuous state of flux of hormones that pregnancy induces. Insulin is also a hormone, obviously.

This does not mean that there will be problems, just that it is safer to be more cautious than usual. If the pregnancy was unexpected, there is nothing to be done, but being cautious, but if a pregnancy is planned, then the woman ought to get her body in the best possible shape before attempting to conceive.

This involves normalizing your weight and blood and being comfortable with the routines that a diabetic has to get used to. If you are comfortable with your situation, you will have that much less to worry about when pregnant.

It may be difficult for a non-professional to know whether a diabetic woman is ready to take on a pregnancy, so a visit to a physician is recommended.

There are risks for diabetic women who become pregnant. The worst of these worries are: diabetic retinopathy, hypertension, kidney disease, autonomic neuropathy or nerve damage to the internal organs, and cardiovascular diseases.

The risks can be reduced by frequent self-monitoring; medication; exercise and diet.

Diabetics have problems with sugar and starch, both of which the body processes into glucose which it uses for energy. The difficulty with diabetics is that this glucose is not processed properly, it enters into the blood stream and is not dealt with by insulin as it ought to be.

The presence of glucose in the blood is normal and is called glaecemia but when the blood is over saturated, it is called hyperglaecemia. For this reason, diabetics have to be aware of their blood/sugar levels at all times, which means that they have to be wary of what they eat.

Many diabetics learn tell-tale indications that their bodies give to warn them of their high or low blood/sugar level, but most diabetics also use blood tests by a GP or even home blood/sugar monitors, which have become cheap enough to buy for personal use.

Not having enough glucose (sugar) in the blood is known as hypoglaecemia and leaves the brain starved of energy, which leads to temporary dizziness, confusion, blackout or a convulsion. Restoring the glucose level to standard returns full consciousness, Most diabetics learn to successfully circumvent this condition. More difficult is hyperglaecemia.

Hyperglaecemia is the opposite of hypoglaecemia and brings with it its own issues but they tend to cause long term problems. Prolonged periods of hyperglaecemia lead to cardiovascular problems, kidney problems and concerns with eyesight and even teeth.

These complications take a long time to develop and the diabetic might not realize that there is a problem until it is rather late. Hence the necessity to monitor blood/glucose levels frequently. One of the first areas to show concerns from hyperglaecemia is the retina because it is so delicate.

Hyperglaecemic blood in the blood vessels in the retina causes them to swell developing high pressures on the sensitive eye mechanisms. Eyesight is soon impaired. The biggest worry for most diabetics is going blind or suffering macular degeneration, which impairs vision quite severely but does not lead to complete blindness.

It is vital for diabetics to have an eye examination at least once a year and twice is better. The opthamologist will be on the look out for a complication known as diabetic retinopathy. If you are a diabetic you ought to be on your guard.

If you experience blurred vision, sudden dark spots or flashing lights before your eyes or feel pressure (not simple), you ought to get to the opthamologist as soon as you can.

There are treatments, especially in the early stages, but the longer you leave it the worse it gets and the more difficult to put right, if that is at all feasible.

Prevention is always better that cure, so diabetics ought to maintain their blood glucose level within standard boundaries and maintain a proper body weight. To do this, you will have to learn how much sugar is in various foodstuffs and take regular exercise. In other words: diet and exercise.

Other concerns that a diabetic may experience with their eyes is glaucoma and cataracts. Cataracts can be cut away quite easily, but glaucoma is very serious and leads to blindness.

Omega 3 essential fatty acids are frequently in the news, but they seem to drift in and out of public consciousness.

Omega 3 essential fatty acids are frequently in the news, but they seem to drift in and out of public consciousness. Let us examine the terminology, they are called ‘essential’ because they cannot be created in sufficient quantities by our bodies. In other words, we have to eat them.

The absolute importance of Omega 3 essential fatty acids really came to light in the 1970’s when a group of Danish scientists discovered than Inuits in Greenland had a far lower rate of cardiovascular issues than Europeans and Americans, despite eating a diet high in fat.

However, the dissimilarity between the diets was that the Inuits derived their fat from sea creatures whereas the other nationalities derived theirs from land animals. The significance of Omega 3 essential fatty acids was established

Once that original research had been verified, other tests on the same topic were carried out by other groups and they all confirmed the significance of Omega 3 essential fatty acids in our diets. These substances help prevent heart disease, cancer, diabetes and macular degeneration and will also alleviate these conditions if you did not find out about them until it was ‘too late’.

Our main source of Omega 3 essential fatty acids is oily fish like tuna, salmon and mackerel fish and other sea foodstuffs. Research backs up the age-old old wives’ tale that fish is brain food. It really is, but it also goes further than that. Omega 3 can help stave off many of the so-called age-related complaints like memory loss apart from the ones already mentioned above.

Some research has also indicated that a deficiency in Omega 3 in children may lead to learning disorders like hyperactivity and attention disorders. There could also be a relationship to dyslexia. Other disorders that are more certainly linked to a shortage of Omega 3 are depression, some allergies and arthritis. This means that expectant mothers ought to be watchful of their intake of Omega 3.

This fish oil has also been seen to reduce the seriousness of high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. It also seems to have a beneficial, anti-aging effect on the skin and wrinkles if taken internally as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Most dietitians would recommend eating oily fish twice per week, but that does not mean that you cannot ingest it in capsules.

It is important to see Omega 3 in relation to other essential fatty acids like omega 6. Omega 6 and omega 3 vie for the same position in our systems and that place is only so big. If you eat too much omega 3, omega 6 cannot get a look in and vice-versa. It is a broad topic, so you are advised to do more research or take the advice of a dietitian.

However, before you believe everything that they say, ask about the interaction of omegas 3 and 6 and see what they have to say.

Green tea is among the most widely used health drinks on earth. In China and surrounding nations, it’s been long considered to be a health drink. It appears that the West is at last beginning to catch up. Nonetheless, there is just too much material that you could have a hard time separating the truth from the untruthful claims.

We will thoroughly look at the health benefits of green tea by looking at what it contains. Catechins really are antioxidants coming from plants that are in all sorts of tea. Recently picked tea leaves are made up of 30% catechins when you measure its dry weight. As a result of variation in processing, green tea is found to have a much more catechins than black tea. We can say that black tea is good for you but green tea is healthier.

Among the most effective catechins in green tea is referred to as Epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG. Moreover, it also has small quantities of caffeine. There are several scientific studies that declare that green tea is wonderful for your health but remember that most of these scientific tests are carried out in the lab. The National Health Institute (NHI) affirms that the benefits of green tea should be further verified in ‘real world’ scientific tests to prove beyond doubt that it is certainly effective. With that in mind, experts claim that green tea is beneficial in the treatment of different types of health problems.

Sipping green tea can help you care for your heart. It is identified to lower hazards of cardiovascular disease and stroke. It may also decrease the cholesterol levels in your body. The FDA didn’t approve the push of tea manufacturers to put the heart advantages of green tea in the packaging, however. The FDA is clearly being cautious now in letting health claims to be imprinted on labeling.

There are scientific studies that centered on the impact of green tea in people with cancer. Inconsistent results have already been reported, however. At the same time, the strength of green tea in dealing with cancer has been shown in several lab tests.

When wanting to lose fat, green tea is witnessed to help. The findings on the effect of green tea in weight reduction, nonetheless, are inconsistent. Battling diabetes is also reported to be something that green tea is good at. When it comes to dealing with diabetes, the scientific tests also provide totally different findings.

You must drink at least 3 cups of tea regularly to gain the best health advantages. Although it isn’t conclusively proven, it is said that adding milk to your green tea can stop the health benefits of green tea. The caffeine found in green tea may be transported to breast milk and so expecting and nursing mothers are encouraged not to drink green tea. There are plenty of natural remedies websites that you can consult to learn more regarding green tea and its many benefits.

Helpful conversation regarding the health benefits of green tea.
Diabetes is a chronic disease which can have numerous side effects.

Diabetes is a chronic disease which can have numerous side effects. The condition (usually) comes about as a result of the pancreas not producing enough insulin, which you require to handle the sugar level in your blood. Having diabetes, or too much sugar in your blood can have serious consequences such as cataracts (treatable blindness), bad teeth and an increased danger of general infections.

However what many individuals do not comprehend is that there is a connection between high cholesterol levels and diabetes. This link is called macular edema and it affects eyesight. If you have diabetes and elevated cholesterol levels, you ought to be paying meticulous attention to your diet in order to avoid macular edema

Macular edema is often a painful, non-reversible form of blindness.

In case you are uncertain about cholesterol, it would be best if we talk about this topic in order to clarify. Individuals talk of ‘cholesterol levels’ because there are three measurements that are important. HDL cholesterol is frequently called ‘good cholesterol’ and LDL cholesterol is known as bad cholesterol.

It is vital to have LDL because it helps in the generation of bile and vitamin D and it helps regulate hormones, but too much of it can block arteries and cause heart issues. HDL is ‘good’ because it mops up LDL and takes it back to the liver where it is got rid of.

Those are the two main levels. You might be forgiven for thinking that it is best to have as much HDL as you can, and this is the case, to a certain extent, because you do require LDL as well, but the total of both of these levels is also important. You must not have a high level of both together either.

The additional reason why these levels are more relevant to diabetics is because diabetics with a high level of LDL run approximately three times more risk of developing macular edema than non-diabetics. Therefore the danger of high cholesterol for diabetics is imperative.

This is such a significant difficulty that diabetics are warned to check the levels of their cholesterol very frequently. The good news is that diabetics will already be following a diet and the decreased cholesterol diet is fairly comparable and is simple to integrate into your current routine.

The foods that you ought to avoid to reduce your level of LDL cholesterol include saturated fats such as are found in red meat and dairy products like full-fat milk, butter, cream and cheese. It is also present in trans and hydrogenated fats, which are present in junk foods and cheap margarine.

The foodstuffs to eat in order to increase your level of LDL are basically mono- and poly-unsaturated fats, vegetarian foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, soya products, fish, nuts and grains, especially whole grains. Roughage and fibre are what you should be searching for. Fish and olive oil are also useful in the battle against LDL cholesterol.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on several subjects, but is now concerned with lowering cholesterol without medication.
