The Microsoft MCSA course (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) is the perfect course for anyone hoping to work as a technician in network support. Whether you already have experience but need a professional course with certification, or you’re about to join the computer world, you’ll have the ability to choose a program to suit your requirements. If you’re just getting started in the IT industry, it could be appropriate to improve your skill-set prior to attempting to go for the first of the four MCP’s (Microsoft Certified Professional exams) that are necessary to gain MCSA certification. Find a company that can tailor your studying to suit your needs – with knowledgeable staff who will assist to make sure that you’ve selected your options carefully.

Training support for students is an absolute must – look for a package providing 24×7 full access, as not opting for this kind of support could hamper your progress. You’ll be waiting ages for an answer with email based support, and so-called telephone support is normally just routed to a call-centre which will chat nicely with you for 5 minutes to ask what the issue is and then simply send an email to an instructor – who will call back over the next day or so (assuming you’re there), at a time suitable for them. This isn’t a lot of good if you’re sitting there confused over an issue and can only study at specific times.

World-class organisations opt for an online access 24 hours-a-day package utilising a variety of support centres throughout multiple time-zones. You’re offered a simple interface which switches seamlessly to the best choice of centres at any time of day or night: Support on demand. Seek out a training company that cares. As only true live 24×7 round-the-clock support delivers what is required.

We can all agree: There’s no such thing as individual job security now; there’s only industry or sector security – a company will let anyone go when it meets the business’ business interests. Security can now only exist through a rapidly increasing market, pushed forward by work-skills shortages. This shortage creates the right environment for a higher level of market-security – a far better situation.

Using the computer sector for instance, a key e-Skills survey demonstrated a national skills shortage across the United Kingdom of around 26 percent. Put simply, we’re only able to fill three out of 4 positions in IT. Achieving full commercial computing qualification is accordingly a quick route to succeed in a long-lasting as well as rewarding occupation. While the market is evolving at such a quick pace, could there honestly be a better area of industry worth taking into account as a retraining vehicle.

Kick out a salesperson who offers any particular course without an in-depth conversation to better understand your current abilities and also your experience level. They should be able to select from a generous choice of training products from which they could give you a program that suits you.. Often, the level to start at for someone with a little experience is often massively different to someone just starting out. Consider starting with user-skills and software training first. Beginning there can make the learning curve a a little easier.

The classroom style of learning we remember from school, using textbooks and whiteboards, is usually pretty hard going. If all this is ringing some familiar bells, dig around for more practical courses which have a majority of interactive, multimedia parts. We see a huge improvement in memory retention when multiple senses are involved – educational experts have expounded on this for years now.

Fully interactive motion videos utilising video demo’s and practice lab’s will turn you off book-based study for ever more. And they’re a lot more fun to do. You’ll definitely want a study material demo’ from any training college. The package should contain instructor videos, demonstrations, slide-shows and virtual practice lab’s for your new skills.

Seek out actual CD or DVD ROM’s whenever you can. Thus avoiding all the issues associated with broadband ‘downtime’ or slow-speeds.

Students often end up having issues because of a single courseware aspect which is often not even considered: The method used to ’segment’ the courseware before being physically delivered to you. You may think that it makes sense (with training often lasting 2 or 3 years for a full commercial certification,) for your typical trainer to courier one module at a time, as you pass each element. Although: Often, the staged breakdown pushed by the company’s salespeople doesn’t suit all of us. You may find it a stretch to finalise all the sections inside of their particular timetable?

For maximum flexibility and safety, it’s normal for most trainees to request that all their modules (now paid for) are couriered out in one package, all at the beginning. That means it’s down to you at what speed and in which order you want to finish things.

by Jason Kendall

Nice One! Finding this article means you’re likely to be contemplating your career, and if training for a new career’s in your mind you’ve even now progressed more than almost everybody else. Are you aware that hardly any of us would say we are satisfied and happy at work – yet the vast majority of us will do absolutely nothing about it. We encourage you to be different and do something – you have the rest of your life to enjoy it.

Prior to considering specific training programs, find an expert who will be able to guide you on the right type of training for you. A person who will ask questions about your likes and dislikes, and find out what types of work suit you:

* Do you like to be around others at work? Perhaps you like being a team player? Maybe you like to deal with tasks that you can get on with on your own?

* What elements are you looking for from the industry your job is in? (Things do change – look at the building trade, or banks for example.)

* Do you want this to be the only time you will need more qualifications?

* Would you like the course you’re re-training in to be in an area where you believe you’ll remain employable up to retirement age?

Think about the IT industry, it will be well worth your time – it’s one of the few sectors of industry still growing in Great Britain and Europe. Salaries are also more generous than most.

At times individuals don’t catch on to what IT is all about. It’s ground-breaking, exciting, and means you’re doing your bit in the gigantic wave of technology affecting everyones lives in the 21st century. We’ve only just begun to get an inclination of how technology is going to shape our lives. Computers and the Internet will massively revolutionise how we regard and interrelate with the rest of the world over the coming decades.

The typical IT employee over this country as a whole is likely to get significantly more money than fellow workers in much of the rest of the economy. Average wages are around the top of national league tables. Apparently there is not a hint of a downturn for IT jobs increases across Britain. The market is continuing to expand rapidly, and as we have a significant shortage of skilled professionals, it’s not likely that it will even slow down for the significant future.

The way in which your courseware is broken down for you is often missed by many students. How is the courseware broken down? What is the order and how fast does each element come? You may think that it makes sense (when study may take one to three years to pass all the required exams,) for a training company to release a single section at a time, as you pass each element. Although: With thought, many trainees understand that their providers ’standard’ path of training doesn’t suit. It’s often the case that varying the order of study will be far more suitable. Perhaps you don’t make it within their exact timetable?

In a perfect world, you want everything at the start – enabling you to have them all to return to any point – at any time you choose. You can also vary the order in which you attack each section as and when something more intuitive seems right for you.

If you’re thinking of using a training academy which still utilises workshops as a feature of their programme, then take note of these typical downsides encountered by most students:

* Loads of travelling to and from the workshop centre – sometimes very long trips.

* Weekday only accessibility with classes can be usual, and with two or three days required at a time, this is usually problematic for a lot of trainees who are working.

* Most of us find 4 weeks annual leave doesn’t go very far. Sacrifice a big chunk of this for study events and see how much more difficult it makes things.

* ‘In-Centre’ workshop days usually become quickly full, meaning we have to accept a less-than-ideal slot.

* Workshop pace – workshops often contain students of different aptitude, so tension develops between the quicker-learners and those who prefer a more relaxed pace.

* The cost of travel – driving or taking public transport backwards and forwards to the training premises plus bed and breakfast can really add up each time you attend. If we just assume a basic 5-10 workshops at about thirty-five pounds for an over-night room, plus 40 pounds for petrol and 15.00 for food, we find an extra four to nine hundred pounds of costs that we weren’t expecting.

* Study privacy can be high on the list of priorities to most students. You don’t want to throw away any job advancement, pay-rises or accomplishment at work while you’re training. If your work discovers you’re putting yourself through accreditation in a completely different market, what will they think?

* Don’t think it’s unusual for trainees not to put a question forward that they would like answered – purely because they’re surrounded by fellow attendees.

* Usually, events are virtually undoable, when you work or live away for part of the week.

Surely it makes so much more sense to study at your convenience – not your training provider’s – and exploit virtual lab environments with videos of your instructors. You can study anywhere you want. If you’ve got a laptop, why not take in some sun outside while you study. Any issues that arise just utilise the 24×7 Support. You could repeat the learning modules as often as you feel you need to. You also don’t need to take notes as you have the lesson indefinitely. Whilst there’s no way this can remove every little difficulty, it certainly reduces stress and eases things. You also have reduced costs, travel and hassle.

by Jason Kendall

To become a proficient web designer and have the most recognised qualification for the job market today, the course you need is Adobe Dreamweaver. The complete Adobe Web Creative Suite should also be understood in-depth. This will mean you have knowledge of Action Script and Flash, amongst others, and could lead on to the Adobe Certified Professional (ACP) or an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) qualification.

In order to establish yourself as a full web professional however, there is much more to consider. You’ll need to bolt on programming skills like HTML, PHP and MySQL. A working knowledge of E-Commerce and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) will give your CV some extra credibility and make you more employable.

Commercial qualifications are now, very visibly, beginning to replace the traditional routes into the IT industry – but why is this the case? With 3 and 4 year academic degree costs spiralling out of control, alongside the industry’s recognition that corporate based study is often far more commercially relevant, there’s been a big surge in Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA accredited training programmes that provide key skills to an employee at a much reduced cost in terms of money and time. They do this by focusing on the skills that are really needed (alongside an appropriate level of background knowledge,) instead of spending months and years on the background ‘padding’ that degrees in computing can often find themselves doing – to fill a three or four year course.

In simple terms: Commercial IT certifications provide exactly what an employer needs – it says what you do in the title: i.e. I am a ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ in ‘Managing and Maintaining Windows Server 2003′. Therefore companies can identify just what their needs are and what certifications are required to fulfil that.

One feature offered by some training providers is job placement assistance. The service is put in place to help you get your first commercial position. Because of the massive need for more IT skills in this country today, there isn’t a great need to make too much of this option though. It’s actually not as hard as some people make out to get the right work as long as you’re correctly trained and certified.

Update your CV at the beginning of your training though – you should get plenty of help from your training provider on this. Don’t put it off until you’ve qualified. Having the possibility of an interview is far better than not even being known about. Often junior positions are bagged by trainees (sometimes when they’ve only just got going.) Generally, you’ll receive better results from a local IT focused recruitment consultant or service than any training provider’s national service, as they will understand the local industry and employment needs.

In a nutshell, if you put the same amount of effort into getting your first IT position as into studying, you won’t have any problems. A number of trainees curiously put hundreds of hours into their course materials and then call a halt once certified and appear to be under the impression that jobs will come to them.

Trainees looking at this market often have a very practical outlook on work, and won’t enjoy sitting at a desk in class, and struggling through thick study-volumes. If this is putting you off studying, opt for more involving, interactive learning materials, with on-screen demonstrations and labs. If we can get all of our senses involved in our learning, our results will often be quite spectacular.

Study programs now come in disc format, so everything is learned directly from your own PC. Using video-streaming, you can watch instructors demonstrating how something is done, and then practice yourself – via the interactive virtual lab’s. Always insist on a look at some courseware examples from the training company. You should ask for slide-shows, instructor-led videos and interactive labs where you get to practice.

Choose physical media such as CD or DVD ROM’s where possible. You’re then protected from the variability of broadband quality and service.

Commencing with the idea that it makes sense to locate the market that sounds most inviting first and foremost, before we’re able to consider which educational program ticks the right boxes, how can we choose the way that suits us? As in the absence of any commercial background in the IT industry, in what way could we know what someone in a particular job does? Arriving at a well-informed conclusion really only appears via a methodical analysis of several unique areas:

* The kind of individual you are – what kind of jobs you enjoy doing, and conversely – what makes you unhappy.

* Do you want to re-train because of a particular motive – for example, do you aim to work based from home (being your own boss?)?

* Is salary further up on your priority-list than other factors.

* With everything that computing covers, you’ll need to be able to absorb the differences.

* You’ll also need to think hard about the amount of time and effort that you will set aside for the accreditation program.

To bypass the industry jargon, and find the best path to success, have an in-depth discussion with an experienced professional; a person who will cover the commercial realities and truth while explaining each certification.

Make sure you don’t get caught-up, as many people do, on the training process. Training for training’s sake is generally pointless; this is about gaining commercial employment. You need to remain focused on where you want to go. Don’t be one of those unfortunate people who set off on a track that on the surface appears interesting – and end up with a certification for a career they’ll never really get any satisfaction from.

Be honest with yourself about how much you want to earn and the level of your ambition. This will influence what precise exams will be required and what you can expect to give industry in return. We recommend that students seek advice from an experienced professional before making your final decision on a learning program, so you can be sure that the chosen route will give you the skill-set required for your career choice.

We all have busy lives, and inevitably if we desire to advance our future prospects, training in addition to a 40 hour week is the only option open to us. Certified training from Microsoft can fill that gap. Maybe you’d like to talk to industry experts, who could offer counsel on what sort of job would be best, and what sort of duties are a good match for someone with your personality. Training programs should be designed to suit your ability level and skills. Hence, having worked out the best kind of work for you, your next requirement is the appropriate training programme that will equip you for the role.

Please understand this most important point: Always get full 24×7 instructor support. You’ll severely regret it if you let this one slide. some companies only provide email support (slow), and phone support is usually just a call-centre which will make some notes and then email an advisor – who will call back over the next day or so (assuming you’re there), when it suits them. This is all next to useless if you’re stuck and can’t continue and only have a specific time you can study.

Top training providers provide a web-based 24×7 package involving many support centres from around the world. You get an environment which accesses the most appropriate office no matter what time of day it is: Support when you need it. Always pick a trainer that gives this level of learning support. Only true live 24×7 support gives you the confidence to make it.

Starting with the understanding that it makes sense to choose the area of most interest first, before we’re even able to mull over what training program fulfils our needs, how do we know the way that suits us? How can we possibly grasp what is involved in a particular job when we’ve never done it? Often we don’t know someone who works in that sector anyway. Deliberation over these different points is imperative if you want to discover the right answer for you:

* The type of personality you have and what you’re interested in – what work-oriented areas you like and dislike.

* Why you want to consider moving into IT – is it to achieve a particular goal such as working for yourself for instance.

* Any personal or home requirements that guide you?

* Getting to grips with what the normal work types and markets are – plus how they’re different to each other.

* What effort, commitment and time you’re prepared to put into the training program.

For the average person, considering each of these concepts requires a good chat with a professional who can explain things properly. And we’re not only talking about the accreditations – you also need to understand the commercial expectations and needs also.

When did you last consider how safe your job is? Normally, this issue only becomes a talking point when something goes wrong. However, the painful truth is that our job security doesn’t really exist anymore, for all but the most lucky of us. Security only exists now in a swiftly growing market, pushed forward by a shortage of trained workers. These circumstances create the correct environment for a higher level of market-security – definitely a more pleasing situation.

A recent national e-Skills investigation highlighted that twenty six percent of all IT positions available remain unfilled as an upshot of an appallingly low number of trained staff. Basically, we can’t properly place more than 3 out of each 4 job positions in IT. Appropriately taught and commercially certified new workers are as a result at a total premium, and it seems it will continue to be so for many years to come. Actually, gaining new qualifications in IT over the next year or two is almost definitely the finest career move you’ll ever make.

The area most overlooked by those weighing up a particular programme is the concept of ‘training segmentation’. Essentially, this is how the program is broken down into parts to be delivered to you, which makes a huge difference to the point you end up at. Drop-shipping your training elements one stage at a time, according to your own speed is the usual method of releasing your program. Of course, this sounds sensible, but you should take these factors into account: With thought, many trainees understand that their providers typical path to completion is not what they would prefer. Sometimes, a different order of study is more expedient. Could it cause problems if you don’t get everything done within their exact timetable?

For maximum flexibility and safety, many trainees now want to make sure that every element of their training is posted to them in one go, with nothing held back. That means it’s down to you how fast or slow and in what order you want to finish things.

One crafty way that training companies make extra profits is by adding exam fees upfront to the cost of a course then giving it ‘Exam Guarantee’ status. It looks impressive, but let’s just examine it more closely:

Clearly it isn’t free – you’re still footing the bill for it – the cost has just been rolled into the whole training package. It’s well known in the industry that when students fund each examination, one after the other, they will be much more likely to pass first time – since they are conscious of the cost and so will prepare more thoroughly.

Take your exams as locally as possible and find the best deal for you at the time. Huge profits are made by many companies who take the exam money up-front. Many students don’t take them for one reason or another but the company keeps the money. Amazingly, providers exist who depend on students not taking their exams – as that’s how they make a lot of their profit. Many training companies will insist that you take mock exams first and hold you back from re-takes until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass – so an ‘Exam Guarantee’ comes with many clauses in reality.

Due to typical VUE and Prometric exams costing in the region of 112 pounds in this country, it makes sense to pay as you go. Why splash out often many hundreds of pounds extra at the beginning of your training? Study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams is what will really guarantee success.

by Jason Kendall

All online businesses can benefit from SEM. Any service or product related company must have a web site – that’s a given. But simply having that on-line presence is not enough. Your clients need to know where you are.

Look at it this way – imagine a retail enterprise with new premises: Heavy investment has gone into fitting it out and setting everything up. It’s opening time, they look for clients… Then notice they’re in a backwater miles from anywhere. So no-one will have a clue how to find them. Can you see a fundamental flaw?

Nearly all commercial sites on the web are in exactly the same situation.

The shape of modern marketing has radically altered. Ten years ago, as everyone was getting on the bandwagon, there was an idea that everyone needed a web site. Businesses scrambled to get themselves an online presence, often spending tens of thousands to create fancy graphical sites. This trend was cheerfully encouraged by on-line design companies, who relished the business! Then it became apparent that no-one was visiting these sites. It had been thought that simply building a website would lead to sales. Sadly, this wasn’t true…

A traditional approach to marketing breaks down on the web. An expert in old-style marketing would compare your web presence with a catalogue. So to drive traffic to that web site, you’ll need to use the regular methods of marketing. They’ll recommend media advertising and promotions in the press. Basically keeping it within their frame of reference. First they make a nice looking catalogue. Then they utilise various marketing methods to get people to look at the catalogue. Completely missing the point of the web environment.

The internet itself is not just a viewing portal. It’s a huge dynamic environment with complex interactivity. Users drill down to investigate the services they’re interested in. And because of Search Engines like Google & Bing/MSN, there are huge indexes of sites that can be easily found (from the customers perspective at least) to perform these tasks. Think of the chaos involved if Business Yellow Pages wasn’t in alphabetical order: How would you ever find what you wanted?

The Search Engines solve this dilemma. Which means businesses can no longer use traditional marketing. As the only thing that counts now is being indexed on Google or the other major Search Engines. Even that though isn’t enough. Research shows that only a tiny minority of people look beyond the fifth slot on page one. Which means you’ve got no chance if the best you can do is page six!

To solve this problem, and bring in a huge chunk of revenue for themselves, SE’s introduced paid advertising. And it has an interesting twist… The only time you pay the Search Engine is when someone clicks on your advert. In other words, you literally Pay-Per-Click (PPC). What a great idea… Essentially, you now only paid for someone who’d already decided they were interested in your service or product. This is an incredibly targeted way of advertising, and done properly, can yield some exceptional results.

However, most fields are completely overrun with PPC ads today. Prices per click have rocketed in some areas. This is due to more and higher bidders entering the market. Click prices are now so expensive in some markets that they’re no longer profitable. In particular where every sale requires a large number of clicks. So Search Engine Optimisation is now becoming a preferred method for many to get to page 1.

As an exercise: Bring up a major Search Engine now and enter a number of keywords for your products or services. Does your site appear in the first 3 pages of results? It’s very doubtful. Which means you’re just like the shop in the middle of no-where. And if your site is listed, is it appearing for keywords that your customers will actually enter?

Maybe you’ve already tried some Pay Per Click advertising so you appear in the paid listings, and maybe you’ve achieved some success so far. But is your campaign properly managed? Are you getting the best return on your investment? Which are your most successful areas? Testing, measuring and split-testing are some of the most important factors with all PPC campaigns. With gaps in your data, you can’t expect to be getting the best return on your investment.

Both in Britain and around the world, statistics show that commercial advertising and selling is experiencing a seismic shift towards the internet. Companies must acknowledge this, to survive and flourish in today’s economy.

by Jason Kendall

As you’re considering studying a course to qualify for an MCSE, you’re probably in 1 of 2 situations. You might be ready to get into the IT environment, and your research tells you the IT industry has many opportunities for men and women who are commercially qualified. On the other hand you are perhaps an IT professional attempting to gain acknowledgement with the Microsoft qualification.

As you find out about training providers, don’t use those who reduce their out-goings by failing to use the latest level of Microsoft development. Over time, this will cost the student a great deal more as they will have been studying an out-of-date syllabus which inevitably will have to be up-dated very quickly. Avoid businesses who’re just out to sell you anything. Advisors should be helping to verify that you are on the right course for you. Don’t allow yourself to be sold their standard course by an over-keen salesman.

It only makes sense to consider study paths which will grow into industry approved qualifications. There are far too many minor schools offering ‘in-house’ certificates which are worthless in the real world. Unless your qualification is issued by a big-hitter like Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco or Adobe, then chances are it could have been a waste of time and effort – as it’ll be an unknown commodity.

An effective training package will also offer accredited exam simulation and preparation packages. As the majority of IT examining boards tend to be American, it’s essential to understand how exam questions will be phrased and formatted. It isn’t good enough simply answering any old technical questions – they need to be in the proper exam format. Always have some simulated exam questions that will allow you to check your knowledge at any point. Simulated or practice exams prepare you properly – then you’re much more at ease with the real thing.

Many trainers provide a bunch of books and manuals. This can be very boring and isn’t the best way to go about studying effectively. Our ability to remember is increased when all our senses are brought into the mix – educational experts have expounded on this for many years.

Interactive audio-visual materials featuring instructor demo’s and practice lab’s beat books hands-down. And you’ll find them fun and interesting. You’ll definitely want a demonstration of the study materials from any training college. You should ask for expert-led demonstrations, slideshows and fully interactive skills-lab’s.

Purely on-line training should be avoided. Ideally, you should opt for CD and DVD ROM courseware where offered, enabling them to be used at your convenience – ISP quality varies, so you don’t want to be totally reliant on your broadband being ‘up’ 100 percent of the time.

One useful service that many training companies provide is a programme of Job Placement assistance. This is designed to assist your search for your first position. Don’t get overly impressed with this service – it’s easy for training companies to make it sound harder than it is. In reality, the massive skills shortage in Great Britain is the reason you’ll find a job.

Nevertheless, avoid waiting until you have qualified before polishing up your CV. As soon as you start a course, enter details of your study programme and get it out there! Getting onto the ‘maybe’ pile of CV’s is more than not being known. Often junior support jobs are given to trainees (sometimes when they’ve only just got going.) If you’d like to get employment in your home town, then you may well find that a specialist independent regional recruitment consultant or service may be more appropriate than a centralised service, because they are much more inclined to be familiar with local employment needs.

To bottom line it, as long as you put the same commitment into getting your first IT position as into training, you’re not likely to experience problems. Some people curiously conscientiously work through their training and studies and then call a halt once they’ve got certified and appear to be under the impression that jobs will come to them.

A subtle way that course providers make more money is through up-front charges for exams then giving it ‘Exam Guarantee’ status. This looks like a great idea for the student, until you think it through:

Everyone knows they’re ultimately paying for it – it’s obviously already in the overall figure from the course provider. Certainly, it’s not a freebie – and it’s insulting that we’re supposed to think it is! Qualifying on the first ‘go’ is what everyone wants to do. Going for exams one at a time and funding them as you go makes it far more likely you’ll pass first time – you put the effort in and are conscious of what you’ve spent.

Sit the exam somewhere close to home and go for the best offer you can find when you’re ready. Huge profits are made by some training companies that get money for exam fees in advance. For various reasons, many students don’t take their exams but no refunds are given. Amazingly, providers exist who rely on that fact – as that’s how they make a lot of their profit. Don’t forget, with most ‘Exam Guarantees’ – the company decides when you are allowed to have another go. You’ll have to prove conclusively that you can pass before they’ll pay for another exam.

Paying maybe a thousand pounds extra on ‘Exam Guarantees’ is foolish – when hard work, commitment and the right preparation via exam simulations is actually the key to your success.

by Jason Kendall

If you want Cisco training, a CCNA is in all probability what you’ll need. The Cisco training is intended for individuals who need to know all about network switches and routers. Routers connect networks of computers to different networks of computers via the internet or dedicated lines.

You may end up employed by an internet service provider or perhaps a national or international corporation which is spread out geographically but needs computer networks that talk to each other. This specialised skill set is highly paid.

If you’re just entering the world of routers, then working up to and including the CCNA is all you’ll be able to cope with – don’t be pushed into attempting your CCNP. When you’ve become more familiar with the work, you will have a feel for if CCNP is something you want to do.

It’s abundantly clear: There’s very little evidence of personal job security available anymore; there’s really only market and sector security – as any company can drop any single member of staff whenever it suits the company’s commercial requirements. Now, we only experience security in a swiftly growing marketplace, pushed forward by a lack of trained workers. This shortage creates the appropriate environment for a higher level of market-security – a far better situation.

The IT skills shortage in the United Kingdom is standing at approx 26 percent, as reported by the most recent e-Skills investigation. Put directly, we only have the national capacity to fill just three out of every four jobs in the computing industry. This one idea on its own shows why the country desperately needs a lot more people to become part of the Information Technology market. No better time or market state of affairs is ever likely to exist for getting certified in this hugely expanding and blossoming market.

Chat with a professional advisor and they can normally tell you many terrible tales of students who’ve been sold completely the wrong course for them. Make sure you deal with an experienced professional that asks some in-depth questions to find out what’s right for you – not for their retirement-fund! Dig until you find the right starting point of study for you. With a little work-based experience or qualifications, you could discover that your appropriate starting-point is not the same as someone new to the industry. Opening with a user skills course first can be the best way to start into your IT program, but depends on your skill level.

Charging for exams as an inclusive element of the package price and offering an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is a popular marketing tool with a good many training companies. But look at the facts:

You’re paying for it ultimately. It certainly isn’t free – they’ve simply charged more for the whole training package. Students who go in for their examinations when it’s appropriate, paying for them just before taking them are much more likely to pass. They are conscious of their investment and take the necessary steps to make sure they’re ready.

Sit the exam as locally as possible and go for the best offer you can find when you’re ready. Why borrow the money or pay in advance (plus interest of course) on examinations when you don’t need to? A great deal of money is secured by training companies charging upfront for all their exams – and banking on the fact that many won’t be taken. It’s also worth noting that many exam guarantees are worthless. The majority of companies won’t be prepared to pay for re-takes until you can prove to them you’re ready to pass.

On average, exams cost about 112 pounds twelve months or so ago when taken at local VUE or Pro-metric centres throughout the country. Therefore, why splash out often many hundreds of pounds extra to get ‘an Exam Guarantee’, when any student knows that the best guarantee is study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams.

Sometimes, folks don’t catch on to what information technology can do for us. It is thrilling, changing, and puts you at the fore-front of developments in technology that will impact the whole world for generations to come. We’re only just starting to see just how technology will influence everything we do. The internet will significantly transform the way we see and interrelate with the entire world over the next few years.

If making decent money is up there on your list of priorities, then you will appreciate the fact that the income on average of the majority of IT staff is significantly higher than salaries in much of the rest of industry. The good news is there is no end in sight for IT growth in the United Kingdom. The industry is continuing to expand hugely, and as we have a skills gap that means we only typically have three IT workers for every four jobs it’s not likely that this will change significantly for quite some time to come.

Commercially accredited qualifications are now, without a doubt, already replacing the traditional routes into the IT sector – but why has this come about? Accreditation-based training (to use industry-speak) is far more specialised and product-specific. Industry has become aware that specialisation is vital to cope with a technically advancing workplace. Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA are the key players in this arena. Essentially, the learning just focuses on what’s actually required. It’s slightly more broad than that, but principally the objective has to be to focus on the exact skills required (including a degree of required background) – without going into too much detail in all sorts of other things – in the way that academic establishments often do.

The crux of the matter is this: Authorised IT qualifications tell an employer precisely what skills you have – it says what you do in the title: i.e. I am a ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ in ‘Planning and Maintaining a Windows 2003 Infrastructure’. Consequently employers can identify just what their needs are and what certifications are required to fulfil that.

Without a constant influx of knowledgeable network and computer support workers, industry throughout the country (as elsewhere) would inevitably grind to a halt. There is a huge demand for technically able people to support systems and users alike. Due to the progressively complex nature of technology, many more competent professionals are being sought to look after the many areas we rely on.

Working on progressive developments in new technology is about as exciting as it can get. You become one of a team of people impacting progress around the world. Technology, computers and connections on the web will dramatically shape our lifestyles in the near future; incredibly so.

Let’s not forget that typical remuneration in the IT market over Britain as a whole is considerably greater than in the rest of the economy, so you will most likely receive much more as a trained IT professional, than you would in most typical jobs. Demand for appropriately qualified IT professionals is certain for a good while yet, because of the constant development in the technology industry and the very large shortage that we still have.

Students hoping to start an IT career usually have no idea of which route to follow, let alone what market to get certified in. I mean, if you have no know-how of IT in the workplace, how can you expect to know what any qualified IT worker fills their day with? Let alone arrive at which accreditation path is the most likely for a successful result. To work through this, a discussion is necessary, covering a number of definitive areas:

* The type of personality you have as well as your interests – which work-centred jobs you enjoy or dislike.

* What sort of time-frame do you want for the retraining?

* What are your thoughts on travelling time and locality vs salary?

* With many, many different sectors to gain certifications for in computing – you’ll need to gain some background information on what differentiates them.

* Having a proper look at what commitment and time that you’re going to put into it.

The bottom line is, the most intelligent way of checking this all out is via a good talk with an experienced advisor who has enough background to provide solid advice.

It’s essential to have an accredited exam preparation programme included in the package you choose. Steer clear of depending on non-official preparation materials for exams. Their phraseology is sometimes startlingly different – and this could lead to potential problems in the actual examination. Simulations and practice exams can be enormously valuable in helping you build your confidence – so that when you come to take your actual exams, you don’t get uptight.

Lately, do you find yourself questioning your job security? For the majority of us, this isn’t an issue until something goes wrong. However, the lesson often learned too late is that job security doesn’t really exist anymore, for most of us. However, a sector experiencing fast growth, where staff are in constant demand (because of a growing shortage of commercially certified people), creates the conditions for real job security.

Offering the computing industry for example, a recent e-Skills investigation highlighted massive skills shortages around the United Kingdom of around 26 percent. Basically, we can only fill just three out of every 4 jobs in IT. Well trained and commercially educated new professionals are correspondingly at a complete premium, and it’s estimated to remain so for much longer. Quite simply, acquiring professional IT skills during the years to come is likely the safest choice of careers you could make.

You’ll come across courses which guarantee examination passes – inevitably that means paying for the exams before you’ve even made a start on the course. But before you get taken in by the chance of a guarantee, consider this:

You’re paying for it by some means. You can be assured it’s not a freebie – it’s just been rolled into the price of the whole package. It’s everybody’s ambition to qualify on the first attempt. Taking your exams progressively one by one and funding them one at a time makes it far more likely you’ll pass first time – you prepare appropriately and think carefully about the costs.

Why should you pay a training college in advance for examination fees? Go for the best offer at the time, rather than pay marked up fees – and sit exams more locally – rather than in some remote place. Buying a course that includes payments for exam fees (which also includes interest if you’ve taken out a loan) is insane. Resist being talked into filling the training company’s account with extra money of yours simply to help their cash-flow! A lot bank on the fact that you don’t even take them all – then they’ll keep the extra money. You should fully understand that re-takes via organisations with an ‘Exam Guarantee’ are always heavily controlled. They will insist that you take pre-tests first until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass.

The cost of exams was 112 pounds or thereabouts twelve months or so ago when taken at VUE or Pro-metric centres in the UK. So don’t be talked into shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds more to get ‘an Exam Guarantee’, when it’s obvious that the best guarantee is a regular, committed, study programme, with an accredited exam preparation system.

With an abundance of computer training courses on the market now, it’s advisable to find a training company who can guide you on one that will suit you. Reputable companies will discuss at length the differing job options that could be right for you, in advance of recommending a training program that can educate you in the relevant field. Whether you want to improve your computer user skills, or would like to achieve professional qualifications in IT, there are easy to follow courses and assistance to turn your goals into reality.

Because there are such a lot of sensibly priced, easy-to-use training and support, it’s easy to find a course that should get you to your destination.

Far too many companies are all about the certification, and completely miss the reasons for getting there – which will always be getting the job or career you want. You should always begin with the final destination in mind – too many people focus on the journey. It’s common, for example, to obtain tremendous satisfaction from a year of studying only to end up putting 20 long years into a career that does nothing for you, as an upshot of not doing the correct level of soul-searching at the outset.

Get to grips with earning potential and how ambitious you are. This can often control which precise exams you will need and what you can expect to give industry in return. All students are advised to talk with experienced industry personnel before they make a decision on a particular retraining course. This helps to ensure it contains the commercially required skills for the career that is sought.

You have to be sure that all your accreditations are what employers want – forget courses which lead to some in-house certificate (which is as useless as if you’d printed it yourself). From an employer’s perspective, only the major heavyweights such as Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or Adobe (to give some examples) really carry any commercial clout. Nothing else will cut the mustard.

It’s likely that you probably enjoy fairly practical work – the ‘hands-on’ personality type. If you’re like us, the trial of reading reference books and manuals would be considered as a last resort, but you really wouldn’t enjoy it. You should use video and multimedia based materials if learning from books is not your thing. Research over recent years has always verified that becoming involved with our studies, to utilise all our senses, is far more likely to produce long-lasting memories.

Find a course where you’ll receive a selection of CD or DVD ROM’s – you’ll start with videos of instructor demonstrations, followed by the chance to use virtual lab’s to practice your new skills. It’s wise to view some of the typical study materials provided before you make your decision. Always insist on video tutorials, instructor demo’s and audio-visual elements backed up by interactive lab’s.

It’s unwise to go for purely on-line training. Connection quality and reliability varies hugely across the ISP (internet service provider) market, you should always obtain disc based courseware (On CD or DVD).

The area most overlooked by potential students weighing up a particular programme is ‘training segmentation’. This basically means the method used to break up the program to be delivered to you, which vastly changes how you end up. Often, you’ll enrol on a course requiring 1-3 years study and get sent one module each time you pass an exam. It seems to make sense on one level, but consider these issues: What could you expect if you didn’t actually complete each section at the speed they required? And maybe you’ll find their order of completion won’t fit you as well as another different route may.

In an ideal situation, you’d get ALL the training materials right at the beginning – enabling you to have them all to come back to in the future – as and when you want. Variations can then be made to the order that you move through the program as and when something more intuitive seems right for you.

The somewhat scary thought of finding your first IT job can be eased by some companies, via a Job Placement Assistance programme. The need for this feature can be bigged up out of proportion though – it’s easy for companies marketing departments to overplay it. Ultimately, the massive skills shortage in the UK is what will make you attractive to employers.

You would ideally have CV and Interview advice and support though; also we would encourage any student to bring their CV up to date as soon as training commences – don’t put it off until you’ve qualified. Getting onto the ‘maybe’ pile of CV’s is more than not being known. Many junior support jobs are bagged by people (who’ve only just left first base.) You’ll normally experience better results from a specialist locally based employment agency than you’ll experience from any training company’s national service, because they’ll know the local area and commercial needs better.

Do ensure you don’t conscientiously work through your course materials, and then do nothing more and expect somebody else to find you a job. Get off your backside and make your own enquiries. Channel as much time and energy into finding your first job as you did to get trained.

Search Engine Optimisation takes into account the factors used by Google, Bing etc. when they position web sites in their natural listings.

by Jason Kendall

Search Engine Optimisation takes into account the factors used by Google, Bing etc. when they position web sites in their natural listings.

These lists are the main results that are shown when you do a search. These do not include the paid listings. The paid listings are typically in a yellow section at the top of the page, and in a column down the right hand side. The ‘natural’ listings are straight from the main index. They show sites listed in the order of importance and relevance – according to their algorithm.

Of course, we would like to be as high as possible on page one. If we’re the 7th listing on page 9 then we’re hardly going to get prospects beating our door down! No-one knows all the factors that Search Engines (SE’s) use to determine your rank. It’s not in the SE’s interest to tell people everything they do.

But there is now a skilled sector entirely devoted to benefiting from high rankings. We have Search Engines constantly developing new technology on the one hand. This causes mass confusion over which methods they use for ratings. On the other hand, there’s Search Engine Optimisation. This uses empirical testing and measuring of various factors to determine which ones are the most important.

Search Engine Optimisation deals with both on-page and off-page issues. Off-web criteria also play a part in SE listings, (e.g. demographics). This doesn’t come under the remit of SEO though. Off-page factors are covered in a separate feature, as that’s a whole subject in itself.

On Page Optimisation

If we can make changes to our site to make it more friendly to Search Engines, this is called ‘on-page’ optimisation. This is quite straight-forward – it simply requires correctly setting up your site. Doing things such as: Keyword seeding (in the right places and the right amounts), using H1 and H2 header tags (and to some extent meta-tags) and internal linking.

It doesn’t matter if all that sounds very confusing.

It’s very easy to control on-page factors. But to be quite honest, they have the least relevance to your ranking these days. To be blunt, some would say it hardly has any effect at all. There was a time when SE’s were ‘duped’ by On-Page optimisation. But that door has been completely closed down for several years now.

If a site has a lot of in-bound back-links though, on-page factors can still be beneficial. If that’s the case, internal linking and a certain amount of on-page fine-tuning can reap rewards.

A Bit of Advice…

Avoid doing SEO on keywords that have millions of listings. The phrase ‘car insurance’ yields 70,000,000 results in the United Kingdom alone! Anyone can see it’s not wise to try and compete with 70 million other pages when you’re just starting out!

Although… If I typed in “Southampton Car Insurance”, then there are only around 300,000 results. (If car insurance in Southampton was my business!) A big number still it seems – but actually quite a small number when it comes to web searches.

I’ve a much better chance in the rankings having added the word ‘Southampton’. Getting ranked for a term such as Car Insurance would take pots of money and a great deal of time. I would actually be competing with the insurance conglomerates! Not a wise choice at all – and actually not the best way to go about things either.

We should concentrate on more accurate ‘phrases’ that give us less competition. They’re known as long tail searches, because they’ll have several keywords. If your market’s very competitive, you could be selecting seven word phrases. Usually, a long-tail phrase is three or four words.

In general, our recommendation is to begin SEO’ing with keyword phrases that reveal fewer than 500,000 results. Occasionally we’ll accept bigger numbers, but only if the results at the top haven’t been optimised well. Then, as we build back-links, we’ll automatically start to gain some ground on the bigger search phrases. If we put in enough effort, we can go after those big phrases in 3-12 months time. This strategy is also far more targeted at the start. We’re looking for people who want to buy, so we use terms with a commercial intention!

It’s a good idea to spread the back-links around your web site. Limiting them to the home page is unwise. We call this ‘deep-linking’ – and Google in particular likes this. Category or Product Group pages are a good example. These may contain links to many individual product pages, so it’s worth driving appropriate search terms to them. The home page shouldn’t be the only one to receive back-links. Google and the other SE’s are looking more and more at how individual pages on your site are listed and treated.
