Choosing the right Presidential teleprompter is a vital part of creating an image that is important to America’s peace and prosperity. The image is that American Presidents are smarter and more current on the details of the world’s challenges than most people. We know better, of course. But image is everything. Sometimes any speaker needs to create a similar image. Now the PT is here to help.

The PT, as it also known, is a lectern/podium with either one glass panel or two. Beneath them the script rolls out deliberately. Two panels allow enhanced naturalness of speaking, since they can flank the podium.

Presidents have at least one small solace we do not share.. It is a notable feature, however, for we lesser mortals, whose presentations may assume more audience participation, or at certain points more detail.

One issue which will have to be fussed over some before any selection is the proper reading range, and its relationship to size. The basic rule of thumb is ten inches of screen for every four meters of distance. Using this standard, print size can easily be adjusted for distance. Most lecterns allow this flexibility to adjust the size of print, and of course there are varying screen sizes as well.

Prompters give the choice of hand-operated or foot-operated controls which govern the pace at which words move across the screen. A President will typically opt for foot controls. This will free his hands to give dramatic emphasis where his speechwriter might have fallen flat, or where his point is simply improbable. Any one of us might need a similar advantage while speaking in public.

The better devices tend to use quality “beam splitter” glass which is especially resistant to glare. It’s exactly what’s needed for outdoor speaking events, when the Sun might make reading difficult at certain times of day.

None of this guarantees anyone the speaking ability to lead the nation, and it’ll still be necessary to practice reading the script. Besides this, it takes practice to learn the trick of sweeping ones glance to either side of the screen to make eye contact. In choosing the right Presidential teleprompter, know that it’s a good tool, but it won’t do your job for you.
