Learning Styles – Or The Ways People Learn
What is it that makes a teacher a good one? Perhaps it’s that they care about their students or maybe it is expertise in the field they are teaching. Maybe it’s the dedication required to devote their time to study groups and maintaining office hours 24/7.
These are all important parts of a good teacher, but there is yet more to it than that. A whiz at chemistry will impart fruitful knowledge to some students but not all of them. A brilliant scientist is not necessarily a brilliant teacher. To be that brilliant teacher of any subject, you must understand how people learn.
Learning Styles
Everyone learns a little bit differently. You yourself already know how you learn best. If you’re going to teach other people, however, you’re going to have to understand how they learn too. That’s why it’s essential that before you step up to shape impressionable minds in any way, shape or form, you have some kind of basic understanding about the way people learn.
There are Four Major Styles of Learners
1. Those Who Learn Visually. Some people can watch you do something once and never need it explained again. These people learn best by watching someone else do something.
2. The Auditory Learners. These types hear it once and they know it. Once something is explained to them, they understand and can be left alone. These people require clear, simple explanations to be at their best.
3. The Reading Learners. If you always throw out the instruction book and just plunge ahead, you are not one of these learning types. However, there are many learners who depend almost completely on the written word to understand the material at hand. For these people, the teacher needs to provide clearly written directions and examples to ensure successful learning.
4. The “Do It” Learners. These guys have to do it to get it. This includes everything from cleaning a pool, to sky diving to rebuilding their sick computer. To find their way somewhere, they must go there and once done, will never get lost.
The fact is that most of us learn using a combination of the above methods. They may watch the teacher do something then do it themselves. They may carry the manual in one hand and the screwdriver in the other while assembling that bar stool. They may be listening to an audio tape of instructions while reading the instructions. Whatever the situation, we all learn a bit differently. The effective teacher knows this and understands how to capitalize on the learning styles to get the material across effectively to everyone.
