Sorting Drawers and Painting Walls: Moving’s Ups and Downs

Everyone knows that moving is a pain. Sometimes literally, as you squat for the fiftieth time to pick up an overloaded Rubbermaid container. We don’t usually realize what pack rats we are until it comes time for us to go through everything and box it up. We often can’t even recall where most of it came from. It just piles up and then, one day, we have to go through and sort it all out.

The longer you live in a place the more stuff you accumulate. Five years in a residence gives you a ton of junk. We tend to cram things into drawers and closets just to get it out of the way. We swear we will come back and go through it later to dispense with it, but that never happens.

Whatever the reason for your move, perhaps you have added a member to your family, perhaps your company relocated you, will need to find a new home. Searching for that new home can be fun. You get to tour a lot of places to find the perfect one suitable to your needs. This venture is not without stress, but think of it as a shopping trip rather than a business decision, and you should do fine.

Of course there is a lot of work involved in your old residence before you can move on. Just about any house needs a coat of paint on most of the walls and new carpet in most of the rooms or the old ones cleaned at the very least. No one wants to look at someone else’s grime let alone move in on it. Remodeling is the order of the day for many homes. New countertops and cabinets always freshen and update a place.

Readying the new abode for moving in is always fun. It brings out the interior decorator in us. We get to pick paint colors and decide on improvements to make. What is not fun is packing up our stuff in the old house and unpacking our stuff in the new. Cleaning out all the drawers and closets is abominable. Cleaning out the garage is even worse.

Usually, the garage looks literally like a dump. If it’s anything like my garage, it has been a landfill for all sorts of mismatched, miscellaneous stuff. Everything from tools, spare parts, a bike that has had flat tires for years. Boxes that hold who knows what have to be tackled and sorted through. The garage is the dirtiest and most tedious project of moving and is never any fun.

Okay, now all that packing and cleaning and sorting and tossing is accomplished, and you feel justifiably rewarded. It has all been worth it. You can move into your new home with its fabulous paint colors, new cabinets and countertops of your choosing. You feel gratified and happy in your new home and proud of your accomplishments. Your vision has become a reality. Your new home reflects the taste of you and your family. The greatest joy of all, however, is the knowledge that you won’t have to move again for a very, very long time.
