Auto Corporations Are Making An Effort To Go Green
Many auto companies are taking a lot of effort to be more green. Many are building efficient cars such as Ford whose traditional cars are reaching 40mpg. Other companies are building cars that use natural gas and ethanol which are both much cleaner burning than regular gas. Others utilize recycled materials in their vehicles while others run environmentally friendly plants that use renewable energy.
Ethanol is a very promising energy source because it is affordable and also cleaner burning. Both GM and Chevy are working on building more cars which will be powered by Ethanol. However, there aren’t enough ethanol fueling stations currently in the U.S in order to support a large number of users. Another positive aspect is that ethanol can be made in the U.S. since it uses corn. GM is aiming to have half of its cars to run on eighty five percent ethanol by 2012.
Did you know that some new cars actually incorporate recycled materials? Ford actually retires old tires and then uses the material for their engines. Recycled tired are fused together with bio-plastic materials in order to build parts for its engines. So far more than 200,000 tires have been re-used. Ford has used recycled materials before in their cars. They have used soy foam for seat cushions and recycled yarns for seat covers before.
Many companies are also considering utilizing natural gas. Natural gas puts out less emissions into the environment plus it is more affordable. The Honda Civic GX is the only vehicle on the market today that is powered by natural gas. GM is currently working on a deal to develop gas engine controls. However, the infrastructure is not currently in place to support a large number of users. The government is planning to roll out the Natural Gas Act which will give tax credits and fuel credits to those who purchase a natural gas vehicle.
In addition to cleaner burning autos, may corporations are also changing the way they operate their plants by using alternative forms of energy. Ford’s plant in Michigan makes use of large scale solar collectors which collect energy to help build their fleet of cars. The solar system can store 2 million watt hours of energy. GM also uses solar energy in its Spanish plant.
European companies are also making big strides to go green in terms of the emissions they put out and the amount of emissions it costs to build them. Many plants are using renewable sources of energy for their plants. Volkswagen is using hydro-electric power for ten percent of its electricity usage. French automaker Renault is planning to use solar panels for its plants in the next few years. These are all steps in the right direction; with hard work hopefully we can wean ourselves off our dependence on foreign oil and clean up the air.
