Vehicles of all shapes and sizes require gearbox repairs at one time or another, one of the more common models is the power steering module. These modules are installed in all types of vehicles running along the road today including cars, trucks and even tractors. Tools are very important when tackling a job of this magnitude and need to be collected before the process can begin. Some of the required tools include a floor jack, jack stands, a drip pan, rags, an air powered gun with half inch connections and a set of half inch sockets. Also some specialty items which are required include a pitman arm remover, spanner wrench and snap ring pliers.

Specialty tools such as a spanner wrench, snap ring pliers and a pitman arm remover will be needed to remove the components. Always practice safety when performing an operation of this type as it will ensure the job goes smoothly and prevent any accidents from happening. To do this the job should be done in a garage or on a concrete surface to provide an even surface for the jack and stands.

Removal of the box requires basic knowledge of mechanical workings, and the specialty tools listed above. In order to remove the module the first thing is to disconnect the pitman arm assembly from the drag link assembly. This is done by removing the cotter pin connecting the two together, next the nut must be removed and finally the arm can be removed with the specialty tool and a hammer.

Once the arm and link have been separated, the tension bolt needs to be removed from the rag joint assembly. Finally the hydraulic hoses need to be removed and this is where the wrenches are used, open ended models are the best ones for this part of the job. Practice extreme care when removing the hoses so they are not damaged during the removal process.

The last part of the removal process includes the retaining bolts which hold the unit in place. There are a total of three bolts all together and are removed using the impact gun and the right sized socket. When pulling the unit out it is important to remember that it is quite heavy so taking care when lifting it is very important. After it has been repaired the installation process is done in complete reverse of the removal steps.

Performing gearbox repairs should be done by trained and seasonal professionals. If a person desires to learn how to do this type of work they can take a class at a community college. Alternatively they can purchase a used unit from a junk yard and practice on it in the privacy of their own home using online instructions.
