Pheasant hunting on a Saturday morning is an American tradition and a way of life for hunters. Phasianus Colchicus is the scientific name of the common pheasant. Many hunters refer to it as simply pheasant or English pheasant.

You will find pheasants mostly in woodland areas but they are also in grasslands. They like to eat things like spiders, grasshoppers, worms, slugs, and centipedes or millipedes. These birds also like to devour lots of berries and grains out in the wilderness, particularly blueberries. If they can come across sunflowers, they really enjoy them! Male pheasants have tails that are over 20 inches long and protective spurs on the back of their legs that takes them from wild animals.

It’s getting harder and harder to find good wild populations of pheasant due to environmental issues such as pollution and the reduction suitable habitat due to things like clear cutting and urbanization. In many regions in the United States pheasant farming seems to be a good solution for guaranteeing future generations. Pheasant farms guarantee a better solution for the pheasants to survive and flourish so that future generations can enjoy the bounty of the land.

The Great Plains has a huge population of pheasants that live in the open grass prairies and around the old farm houses. Pheasants enjoy pecking around grassy fields and often will bed down under old houses and around old farm equipment. The United Kingdom has a lot more pheasants than we do here in the United States. In the United States, it is estimated that there are about 10 million pheasants while in the UK there are approximately 35 million.

Males do a strutting movement in the spring of the year to entice a female into courting. Strutting is when a cock puffs his feathers and his head will become bright red and engorged. Male birds will fight to the end to win the right to breed with a suitable female.

Male birds are polyamorous because they will mate with more than one female throughout their lifetime. It is common to find more than one female following the male at any one time. Female pheasant will lay an egg batch of about 10 eggs after mating. The incubations period last between 23-26 days between April to June.
