We love to read books and magazine articles about how the rich acquired their wealth. We learn that it’s not that they didn’t experience tough times, but that they didn’t allow the tough times to dominate their thought processes. Positive belief is paramount – there are no two ways about it!

Adopting this focus whilst working on a slimming regime will make all the difference. You’ll reach your goal so much sooner with the right attitude. An optimistic outlook introduces all sorts of achievement-oriented circumstances. But being down-beat and uncertain won’t reap the rewards.

This is because we have a mechanism, called the Reticular Activation System. It tells the brain what to think about. It’s normal for things that were once pressing thoughts to move to the back of our minds – that’s because thoughts that are no longer pressing are moved to our sub conscious mind.

When we attempt to do something, our RAS (Reticular Activation System) will search for anything of significance in the sub-conscious mind, and bring it to our attention. If we’re taking a walk for example, only the things that have meaning to us will be noticed.

This means that if we’ve been regularly sending messages that are positive to our sub-conscious mind, then that’s what it will transfer back. On the other hand, if our sub-conscious has been receiving a bunch of defeatist, downbeat messages, that’s also what will come back.

Achievers, it would appear, are able to manipulate the messages streaming through to their sub-conscious minds. They do this by choosing exactly what the conscious mind sends, thereby programming their RAS. This makes it an essential instrument for achieving goals, as the sub-conscious mind can’t distinguish between what’s real and what isn’t.

Accordingly, we must consciously focus on a positive representation of our ideal target. The Reticular Activation System will then pass this on to our subconscious. As it believes everything it’s told, it will then help us achieve the goal. It does this by bringing to our attention all the relevant information which otherwise might have remained as ‘background noise’.

Napoleon Hill once wrote that we can attain any reasonable goal if we keep it clearly in our mind. That’s as long as we don’t allow any negative thoughts about it. Obviously, if we keep telling ourselves that we can’t hit a goal, our sub-conscious won’t allow us to achieve it.
